Confederacy, Lisbon, Va., Feb 12 (1862). Bold brown cds on small cover with matching straight line "Paid" handstamp with manuscript "5" rate to Arnoldton, Va., Extremely Fine and choice, brown cancellations are scarce with only 54 Post Offices using brown ink, this is perhaps the finest brown postmark (pictured in Monroe Book, page 84).

Confederacy, Petersburg, Va., May 29. Bold sharp strike of blue cds with matching "10" rate handstamp on Evans & Cogswell, Stationers & Printers, Columbia S.C. corner card cover to New Center, S.C., with S.C. Volunteers soldier's "in Haste" endorsement at lower left, Very Fine and choice.
Estimate; $200 - 300.

When areas of Charleston were subjected to the shelling by Union batteries, some businesses moved to Columbia. The printing firm of Evans & Cogswell was one of these businesses. They build a printing plant at the corner of Gervais and Huger streets in 1863 and began printed currency for the Confederate government. On the night of February 17, 1865, Sherman's Army burned this print plant. The original brick walls stood, it was later rebuilt and still stands to this day.

The Evans & Cogswell Company are known for producing the 1861 Charleston, S.C. Postmaster Provisional typographed entires on envelopes of various colors (16UX1-16UX6) and placed on sale August 15th 1861. (Image1)

On June 1st, 1861, the Confederate Postal Service began operating. Prior to this date the seceded states operated under U.S. regulations and rates. Since no Confederate stamps were available, postmasters were directed to use any temporary or provisional measures. (Image1)

N.C.T.", included is original enclosure datelined "General Hospital No. 27, Richmond, Va. July 24/63" stating "I am now on the mend and in good spirits…much better than I was when father left….am good to be down for good while…", etc., Very Fine.

General Hospital #27 was infamous and was also called "Gangrene Hospital" and Company G Hall Hospital. It was formerly a social, meeting and drill hall operated by Militia Co. G. The hospital opened in March 1862 and closed July 1863. It had a capacity of about 50. (Image1) (Image2)
