RARE FRANCO-PRUSSIAN WAR FRAMED "...d3 FOR BRINDISI ROUTE..." DEFICIENCY MARKING; 4 Nov. 1870 env. (some wear inc. small tear at top centre, and with minor dusting but still attractive) from Sydney ("D COOPER & Co." embossed flap) to London endorsed "[via] Marseilles" but re-routed due to the Prussian Siege of Paris; franked with 10d Lilac DLR sideface tied by fine "SYDNEY/N.S.W." duplex and by part of the frame of a very rare and very fine boxed "INSUFFICIENTLY PAID/FOR BRINDISI ROUTE/DEFICIENT POSTAGE/d3" mark of which only seven examples on full covers have been recorded by us on mail from New South Wales. There is a very fine quartered circle London "M/S/W/L" Missent mark on the front, and no less than 8 London backstamps (26/27 Dec.) incl. a black "OFFICIAL PAID/LONDON S.W." cds applied in error and overstruck!
