Note: The First Period Eagles have the district name only, but no consignment number, and it only lasted from May to June 1864. At the very beginning of this period, some districts did not overprint the stamps with the district name.(Image 1) (Image 2)

20293 25a, 21a, 23, 24a imageAN EXTRAORDINARY FOUR-COLOR FRANKING Zacatecas 1r blue 3rd period (#202-1864), 2r yellow 3rd period (#204-1864), 4r green 2nd period (#166-1864) and 8r red 2nd period (#125-1864), the 4r cut slightly into at right, in other respects all examples displaying full to large margins, each tied by "Franco En/Zacatecas" handstamp (Schatzkès #1851 A) on registered cover front to Guanajuato. "0" handstamps in corners denoting registered mail, framed "Certificado en Zacatecas/Sale en (12) de (Dbre) de 186(4)" registration datestamp (12.12.1864), (Schatzkès #1849 A, #1849 B). Horizontal crease. A striking four-color franking of great scarcity, with less than five recorded, and additionally a rare registered mail; a very important rarity of this issue. Note: As stipulated for registered mail by the postal rules, the front of the cover had to be notated as received and signed by the addressee, this serving as a proof of delivery. On front, the date of receipt was written by a postal clerk, and in this case is tying the 4r denomination and reading "Guanajt. Dbre 16/64". The cover front had to be sent back to the post office of origin, to be filed during two years, being destroyed later. This fact demonstrates the scarcity of surviving registered mail. Provenance: Robert A. Paliafito(Image 1) (Image 2)
