SHIP WRECK MAIL - SS LOUIS V EX SALONICA AND SS KENILWORTH CASTLE EX S. AFRICA: Trio inc. 1917 long OHMS env. to London ex mail from
Salonica carried by French SS Louis V. This probably an "ambulance" env. but struck with three red boxed purple "DAMAGED BY IMMERSION / IN SEA WATER IS" hs; much travelled 1917 env. originally posted Kenegha Drift to Le Havre; returned to S. Africa,
readdressed and put onboard SS Kenilworth Castle to England when the ship collided with a destroyer escort setting off 2 depth charges which damaged Kenilworth's hull. The ship made it to Plymouth where the mails were landed and the env. was struck
with a boxed "DAMAGED BY IMMERSION / IN SEA WATER" hs plus French 1917 Postes, Telegraphes et Telephones env. endorsed "accident de mer" used as "ambulance" for mails originating in Yokohama. (3 items) Cross Reference: MARITIME MAIL,

SHIP WRECK MAIL - TRAGIC LOSS OF THE SS LEINSTER BY TORPEDO: 10 Oct. 1918 env. Limerick to Bordeaux (stamp floated off) officially
resealed with fine boxed Type 1 purple "SALVED FROM/S.S. "LEINSTER"" cachet. The Leinster was torpedoed by U-123 the first torpedo hitting the mail room; she sank with a large loss of life. One bag of mail was washed up on the Isle of Man. Few covers

SHIP WRECK MAIL - SS IMPERATOR & SS KENILWORTH CASTLE INCIDENTS: 1919 env. Canada to Surrey with boxed "DAMAGED BY IMMERSION / IN
SEA WATER" hs the incident probably caused by rough seas experienced by Imperator when crossing the Atlantic; 1918 pair env. registered from S Africa to London or Richmond both carried by the SS Kenilworth Castle that collided with a destroyer escort

SHIP WRECK MAIL - FIRE AT FALMOUTH ONBOARD THE SS INGOMA; 6 May 1921 env. Brussels to Paramaribo, Surinam (stamp floated off) with
fine boxed Type 1 "DAMAGED/BY FIRE" cachet both on the front and on the resealing labels on the reverse. The hold fire whilst loading at Falmouth was extinguished by flooding the compartment and the mails were returned to London for drying. Four

SHIP WRECK MAIL - LOSS OF THE IRISH SEA FERRY SS PRINCESS VICTORIA: 30 Jan. 1953 env. Scunthorpe to Larne N. Ireland (stamp floated
off) carried onboard the SS Princess Victoria. Heavy seas broke open the bow doors and the Victoria sank with the loss of 133 lives. Mail bags were washed ashore weeks later. Mails were cancelled with a makeshift purple "DAMAGED BY / SEA WATER" hs.
