(minor wear) from "SLIGO" (fine cds on front) to Quebec with no manuscript rates but having a very fine large distinctive 'loopy' Irish Handstruck "4" (presumably of Dublin, although it could conceivably have been applied at Londonderry because there is no Dublin backstamp) on the front along with a very fine Quebec h.s. "25" (matching 11 Feb. arrival backstamp). Only a handful of these very late usages of the distinctive Uniform Fourpenny Postage (1839/40) Handstruck "4" marks have been recorded (all on covers like this), as British Accountancy Marks claiming 4d from the Canadian P.O. (the 1d British postage plus half the 6d fine). Exhibition Quality. Rare pair. Only a handful of these very late usages of the distinctive Uniform Fourpenny Postage (1839/40) Handstruck "4" marks have been recorded (all on covers like this), as British Accountancy Marks claiming 4d from the Canadian P.O. 352   imageNEW BRUNSWICK - 17c SINGLE FRANKING COVER COMPULSORILY REGISTERED ON ARRIVAL IN G.B.; Remarkable 4 Dec. 1867 env. (slightly reduced at right, flaps partly glued down and some wear) from "FREDERICTON/N/B/" (cds on reverse) to London franked with New Brunswick 17c Black tied by fine barred oval. There are only 17 recorded N.B. 17c covers in total. On arrival in London it was noticed that the letter enclosed cash and so it was endorsed "C[as]h" with "GM" initials on the front, a P.O. "CAUTION" label (dated 1863; showing just how few compulsorily registered covers were identified by the P.O. per annum in south London!) was glued on the reverse (damaged when the green string that was applied by the P.O. was removed by the addressee) and a manuscript "8d" charge (4d registration fee + 4d fine) applied to the front along with a very fine red "REGISTERED/S.D.O." cds. It is thought that there is only one other recorded 19th century Transatlantic cover recorded for the whole of British North America. Almost certainly a Unique usage. Exhibition Item of great character and rarity. [With 1966 BPA certificate of genuineness signed by Robson Lowe et al.] [Illustrated Jephcott, 1964, p.288; & in FTM, p.107.] Cross Reference: NEW BRUNSWICK, REGISTERED MAIL, REGISTERED MAIL, POSTAGE DUE MARKS (Image) (Image2)
