UNDERPAID 3c-RATE WITH SMALL QUEEN 3c SINGLE-FRANKING & BOXED "DEFICIENT-POSTAGE[2]/HALF-FINE[1½]"; 7 Jan. 1871 env. from
"[...]INN[...]" (unclear cds on front) to Edinburgh with Small Queen 3c (just) tied by a barred oval and so underpaid for 6c rate to G.B.; so there is a mainly fine large boxed "DEFICIENT-POSTAGE[2]/HALF-FINE[1½ = 3½]" mark (of Hamilton? - cds on
back) on the front. Good example of underpayment for the 6c rate using the internal Canadian rate 3c stamp - the 3c Small Queen single franking is understandably rare on covers to GB. [Illustrated in FTM, p.116.] Cross Reference: POSTAGE DUE

Victoria BC to Somerset "Via NY" with Small Queen 3c+2c tied by dumb bars but overweight and so having "INSUFFICIENTLY-PAID" and what appears to be an unrecorded handstruck "7½" mark crayoned (all done on board the S.S. 'Polynesian'?) over because it
was struck so faintly, also having a partly fine rare "CANADIAN-PKT" steamer's P.O. cds; plus similar 18 Aug. 1877 env. ex "INTERCOLONIAL RAILWAY/Riviere du Loup" (v. fine oval blue d.s. on reverse) to Clitheroe with Small Queen 5c cancelled by small

UNIQUE(?) COVER WITH G.B. STAMPS - 2½d BLUE PAIR - USED IN TORONTO & INITIALLY TAXED AS UNPAID; Fine 24 Jan. 1881 env. from Toronto
to Portarlington in Ireland (6 Feb.; cds on reverse) uniquely(?) franked with a Pair of G.B. Surface Printed 2½d Blues (pl.19) tied by a v. fine "TORONTO/ONT./1" Duplex and so with a v. fine "T" in circle mark (Toronto presumably) beside the
manuscript "25" (25 UPU gold centimes deficient - treated as entirely unpaid) rate. On arrival in G.B. an unpaid letter should have been charged 10d (assuming an above ½oz 5d rate), but the British stamps seem to have been recognised on arrival and
the "25" cancelled with no Postage Due charged. We are not aware of any other Canadian Usages of a G.B. QV Surface Printed stamp on cover! Fabulous Exhibition Item. Cross Reference: G.B USED ABROAD STAMPS & COVERS, POSTAGE DUE STAMPS & COVERS,

UNPAID UNCHARGED "Free" COVER FROM CANADA TO "Queen Victoria" HERSELF!; 21 July 1866 env. (some edge stains and wear) from
"GLENNEVIS/C.W" (v. fine manuscript-dated cds on the front endorsed "O.H.M.S. Free" and "Via Canadian Steamer" and most unusually addressed "To Queen Victoria, London"! The backstamps 21 July "COTEAU STATION", 22 July "MONTREAL" and 4/6 Aug. "LONDON"
(3) show that the letter missed the Canadian Packet and so (as per PO rules) was sent via New York and the Cunard S.S.Persia'; hence there should have been a 4d Canadian claim but there is a black manuscript "8" claim marking (which would only have
applied for the Canadian Packet route; 1d internal + 3d half fine + 4d steamer rates); no British Postage Due charge was raised in the end! Unique(?) Transatlantic cover from Canada sent free to the Queen. [Illustrated in FTM, p.103.]Cross
