A strip of three is the largest recorded used multiple of this stamp - sold together with single examples used on the Plymouth to Bristol Travelling Post Office with "B16" obliterator and a further single cancelled on the "Verviers / Coeln" Ambulante. 6065 image1881 (July 1): 3 c. grey bistre-brown on pale bistre, plate I, imperforate, a used horizontal pair (positions 34-35) with good to large margins all round, on 1882 cover endorsed "p. Lotharingia" (Hamburg-America Line, the ship sank later in 1882) from Cap Haitien (April 1) to Port au Prince, tied by on arrival by "Port au Prince / Haiti" cds (April 3) in black. The 6 cents paid triple the internal letter rate of 2 cents. The sole recorded example of this particular franking and the highest recorded internal rate bearing the Liberty Head issues. Reverse with Kingston arrival cds (Aug 1). The 5 cent rate per 15 grams was applicable for a foreign letter 'Caribbean rate' under 300 miles. Just two covers known, the other (ex Hubbard, lot 200) has faults and was mailed later in the year.
