Reverse with Beechworth despatch datestamp (Oct 14) and Melbourne transit (Oct 17). Oval "REGISTERED / G.P.O." in red applied in London with manuscript "6" pence due and Worksworth arrival (Feb 10, 1857) on reverse. 30356 imageTypographed from Woodblocks by Samuel Calvert 1854/55: 6 d. orange-yellow and REGISTERED 1 s. rose-pink & blue, this last apparently with roulettes but mailed prior to the August 1857 Trials of same, tied to 1856 cover endorsed "Registered" to Ledbury, Herefordshire by "61" barred numeral obliterator of Maryborough in black. Reverse with Maryborough despatch (Aug 2), Melbourne transit (Aug 4), Liverpool datestamp (Nov 21) and thence via London with "REGISTERED / * / G.P.O." in black (Nov 22) and handstruck '6' (pence) in black for registration. Adhesives lifted for checking and replaced. Excellent article on the rouletted adhesives illustrating this cover by Geoff Kellow RDP accompanies the lot. An extraordinarily important and rare cover. Large Star, imperforate, a used single, horizontal pair and horizontal strip of five, all with good to large margins all round, on 1857 cover to Beechworth, tied by barred numeral "1" obliterators of Melbourne in black. Reverse with Melbourne despatch datestamp (April 4) and Beechworth arrival (April 8). The embossed flap on reverse of the cover identifies the sender as the Melbourne firm "Fergusson & Mitchell", engravers and printers. John Mitchell was the true, alas unacknowledged, designer of the Emblems Issue. A delightful and scarce cover. Certs. 30363 imageTypographed from electrotypes by Samuel Calvert 1857: Emblems 2 d. grey-lilac, no wmk., rouletted 18-19, an unused horizontal pair of outstanding centering for this Trial issue and of lovely colour, minor ironed bend on right hand stamp and surface spot on left stamp mentioned for accuracy only, unused without gum. An exceptional and extremely rare pair - one block of six was discovered (1893) and of these, one stamp is now housed in the collection of His Majesty King Charlöes III. The six stamps are believed to be the sole recorded examples - this pair being the largest multiple extant and the finer of the two known - the other having pinholes where, it is believed, the stamps were adjoined to a document thought to be a submission by Samuel Calvert for consideration of this method of separation. Illustrated in "The Stamps of Victoria" by Geoff Kellow RDP on colour plate 8. Delightful and a great rarity of the Emblems issue. Certs.
