30255 image1825 (Jan 29): Entire letter endorsed "O.H.M.S." in manuscript from George Town to Charles Barnard, Rouge Mont, On the Tamar; with circular "GEORGE / TOWN" handstamp in black, further endorsed by sender "Commandant P.D." (Penal Department). The letter is signed by Chas. Cameron, Lt. Col. Commandant. He was appointed commandant of Port Dalrymple on 14 Dec 1822, having arrived in Hobart with three Officers and 50 soldiers, escorting 182 convicts, in November 1821. A fine and rare entire: in this describer's opinion the finer of the two recorded examples (the other was in the Lewis C. Viney collection, lot 1509) of this handstamp. 30256 image1839 (Dec 7): Printed Police Pass "Police Office (Royal Arms) Hobart Town" amended in manuscript to "Campbelltown" stating that the bearer (one George Luke) a Prisoner, holding a ticket of leave, has permission to pass this day to search for work in Campbell District only ... and signed off by the Police Magistrate, with the bearer's identification and description on reverse. George Luke was convicted at Somerset Assizes on 6 August 1833 for larceny, sentenced to 7 years transportation arriving in Van Diemen's Land in 1834 on the ship "John Barry". Convicts were allowed to seek work for their own financial benefit (he was a 26 year old blacksmith), this relieved the authorities of the cost of his maintenance. 30257 image1844 (Aug 10): Four sides of entire letter from George Town to Yeovil, Somerset written by one William Pelham, rated '5d.' in manuscript for 1 d. internal fee and 4d. for outgoing Ship Letter, and a further '1/8d.' due upon receipt in Yeovil with arrival on reverse (1 Feb 1845). A most interesting letter: "(The Governor, Sir John Eardley-Wilmot) has taken the Labour of the Convict population from the settlers, and under the present probabtion system the prisoners are all let loose and walk about with a slip of paper called a Pass and hiring themselves at not less than ...£9 a year. Robertson of 1st Battalion, 12th Foot Tasmania" and countersigned at lower left by his Commanding Officer. Struck on despatch with circular "GENERAL POST OFFICE / HOBART TOWN / ♚" in red (Jan 11). Reverse with Blairgowrie arrival cds (May 13) where charged the concessionary rate of "3d." due to pay (1 d. Captain's gratuity and 2 d. unpaid Packet rate). Lance Corporal Robinson was on convict guard duties in Hobart Town, the letter states he has been transferred to the 1st. Battalion. Best 1856/57: 1 d. pale brick-red (2 examples) and single 4 d. blue, imperforate, no wmk., margins just shaved to huge, tied to 1858 entire letter to London endorsed "pr. Columbian", tied by "60" numeral obliterators in black alongside framed "POST OFFICE / LAUNCESTON / ♚ / VDL" datestamp (Jan 12) in red. The "Columbian" left Melbourne on Jan 17, arriving at Suez via Galle on Feb 27. A superb and rare entire. Note - I have followed the certification as to the stamps on the cover, however the two 1 d. adhesives do appear to be in the November 1856 deep red-brown shade. Certs.
