1013 og Image1904, 2c Rose, "Canal Zone" Double (1b). Two distinct overprints approximately 3.5mm apart, tropicalized original gum, exceptionally fresh

VERY FINE. AN IMMENSELY RARE EXAMPLE OF THE 1904 2-CENTAVOS ROSE WITH DOUBLE "CANAL ZONE" HANDSTAMPED OVERPRINT. THIS IS THE ONLY EXAMPLE WE HAVE OFFERED SINCE KEEPING COMPUTERIZED RECORDS.

This error is notably absent from nearly all Canal Zone collections, including Salz, Parker, Helme, Leeds and Drucker. Plass recorded four examples, but the only example we could locate is from the Plass collection, later offered in the "Eagle" collection. The two overprints are far more distinct on the Gibbs example than those on the Plass copy.

With 1969 A.P.S. certificate (Image)
