Rumrill", letter is headed "Marysville May 29 /52" and reads in part…Inclosed please find Draft for three Hundred. I wood have sent you four only I am oblige to By a Cow for witch I will have to pay 10 & 25 at Least. I also find that we will have to have a mutch Larger stock of provition than I thort as thair ar a great many miners on arigon Crik who all want to By of us., Very Fine and rare, ex-Myerson. Estimate  $750 - 1,000. Gregory's Express operated in California, between San Francisco and New York, and even beyond the United States from February of 1850 to May of 1853. Gregory's Express was in direct competition with Adams & Co. from the start and with Wells Fargo & Co. after July of 1852. Joseph W. Gregory gave up the express business and returned to the East on May 1, 1853.After the demise of Gregory's Express, Frank Rumrill allied himself with Wells Fargo and established Rumrill's Express between Marysville and Downieville and eventually on to Gibsonville. Rumrill's Express was in competition with Langton & Co.'s Express and subsequently Langton & Bro.'s Express, which were allied with Adams. Frank Rumrill sold his Yuba River business to what was by then Langton's Pioneer Express and returned to the East to marry the sweetheart he left behind in 1855. (Image1)

726   image(Tracy & Spear's Express) T&S, manuscript with boxed "Paid" used as frank on 1853, 3¢ Nesbitt entire used as a paste-up, carried from the Placerville area to San Francisco, operating north of Placerville T&S turned this letter over to the Wells Fargo at Spanish Flat with cds for November applied (we know from other letters that the agent at Spanish Flat was using the same canceling device for both the U.S. Mail and WF material), from Spanish Flat the letter was carried north by Wells Fargo to its center at Georgetown where it received four oval handstamps on the back side and one on front, Wells Fargo then carried it to San Francisco, Very Fine. Estimate  $4,000 - 6,000. A GREAT EXPRESS RARITY WITH ONLY TWO EXAMPLES KNOWN. THIS BEING THE ONLY ONE IN COLLECTOR'S HANDS AS THE OTHER IS IN THE WILTSEE COLLECTION. Tracy & Spear's Express is very rare as it operated but a few months in 1858 around the city of Placerville. By 1859 Spear had departed and Theodore Tracy was working as Wells Fargo's agent in Placerville. In 1864 he became the mayor of Placerville. His brother, Edward was his agent at some earlier point and in 1859 moved to Portland to start his own express operation in conjunction with Wells Fargo. (Image1)

Scott No. 143L1  Estimate $15,000 - 20,000. A BEAUTIFUL EASTBOUND PONY EXPRESS COVER WITH THE WELLS, FARGO & COMPANY $2.00 HORSE & RIDER ISSUE. THE FINER OF ONLY TWO RECORDED $2.00 WAY USAGES FROM PLACERVILLE. The rate was $2 per ½ ounce from April 1, 1861 until June 30, 1861 when the Pony Express was run by Wells Fargo & Co. and not the Central Overland California & Pikes Peak Express Company. Pony Express mail from Placerville is rare compared to those originating the in the San Francisco or Sacramento Pony Express offices. Mails collected at stations along the route between San Francisco and St. Joseph is term "way" mail. Way mail was accounted for, and carried, separately from the other mails with each letter entered on a way bill that was updated as additional letters were collected. At St. Joseph, the pony mail was turned into the St. Joseph post office for onward transmission by the government postal system. St. Joseph was the terminus for the Hannibal and St. Joseph Railroad, from whence there was rapid mail connection to the east. (Image1)
