Forwarded By Military Express To Fort Yuma, manuscript postmark "Barkhamsted Ct, July 23d / 66" ties 3¢ rose (65), light corner bend, on light buff cover addressed to "C.H. Case, Band, 14th Infty U.S.A., San Francisco, California", upon receipt re-directed to "Fort Yuma, Mil Ex" in manuscript using the red ink typical of the military at this time, it should be noted that the cover was not re-mailed through the post office (it does not bear a San Francisco postmark) and instead was transmitted using the military supply route between San Francisco and Fort Yuma, reverse with pencil "Rec at Fort Yuma, August 29th 1866", Very Fine. Estimate  $1,000 - 1,500. Fort Yuma is located in Imperial Valley, California, across the Colorado River from Yuma, Arizona operating 1851-83. After the Civil War the fort was a quartermaster depot to store and distribute supplies for all military posts in Arizona Territory, Nevada, Utah Territory, New Mexico Territory and Texas during the Indian Wars period (1866-78). When this cover was mailed, detachments of the U.S. Army 14th Infantry Regiment fought in the Snake War against the Native Americans in Arizona Territory from 1866-68. Charles H. Case died in 1867. Estimate  $150 - 200. The Military Station was established to handle the mail that was passed to and from Black Jack Pershing "Army" that had invaded Mexico (March 14, 1916 to February 7, 1917) to chase down and kill Pancho Villa after he crossed into the US and attacked Columbia, NM. Only mail coming out of Mexico will have the Calexico postal mark. Only a few examples known with this being the only example directed to the west coast. (Image1)

637   imageNevada City, Cal., 3 Paid, Nov 23 (Nevada), integral rate cds (NEV-1190) with "Paid 3" handstamp below on 1853 cover to Freesport, Ill., with red "Steamer Winfield Scott" handstamp at top; cover wear and repair internal hole in address panel, Very Fine appearance, ex Lichtenstein, Clifford. Estimate  $1,500 - 2,000. ONE OF THE SEVEN KNOWN COVERS RECOVERED FROM THE WRECK OF THE "STEAMER WINFIELD SCOTT". The "Winfield Scott" was a 1,291-ton steamer built in New York City in 1851, which was put into service along the Pacific Coast route in 1852. The "Winfield Scott" was purchased by the Pacific Mail Steam Ship Company from the New York and San Francisco Line in July 1853. One round trip between San Francisco and Panama, but on December 2, 1853, she was stranded off Anacapa Island in the Santa Barbara Channel and lost on her second trip for the company. The five mail bags, passengers, crew and cargo including gold species were saved. Nine examples of this two-line handstamp are recorded, of which two were carried before the "Winfield Scott" was commissioned into the Pacific service. (Image1)

Estimate  $400 - 600. Bamber carried from Oakland into the business district of San Francisco. Post box" senders directive at bottom left and "Received from the Post Office Box of Dr. Hammond, Oct 10th, Miss Hammond having called at the office of the Penny Post on the 9th & 10th for the same" docketing; cover with backflap expertly reattached, otherwise Very Fine, an interesting usage showing the difficulties the Penny Post had in obtaining letters for clients at the San Francisco Post Office.
