203   imageChina, 1910-1924 Missionary Correspondence from China & Manchuria, a fascinating correspondence of covers with contents from Charles A. Leonard, an American Missionary stationed in China during the early part of the 20th century, all written to family in the United States, the correspondence is made up of two parts, the first part from 1910-1924 consists of 44 covers (with letters) and 19 Letters without covers, the correspondence commences with a cover written en route to China aboard the Steamship "S.S. China", followed by a cover written from Yokohama, again written on "S.S. China" letterhead, the next is a letter datelined "Shanghai, Oct. 16, 1910" and sent via the U.S.P.O. in Shanghai, which mentions, travel plans, "Leaving on Chinese Steamer for Chefoo, then onto Tiger Head and inland 8 miles to Laichowfu", the balance of the covers and letters are either written and sent from Laichowfu or Chefoo and contains fascinating contents of their arrival and acclamation to life in China, with vivid context of the life and times, one cover is postmarked with Pingtu bilingual postmark, letter talks of make the journey to Pingtu on Donkeys, of particular interest are five letters written in January of 1912 with fascinating details of the Chinese Revolution, a couple of covers are franked with Russian Offices in China Adhesives and tied by Russian Post Office double circle postmark, also noted is 1917 cover from Harbin franked with Japanese adhesives.The second portion of the correspondence continues when Rev. Leonard was later stationed in Harbin in the mid-1930's, it consists of 13 covers without letters, plus two additional covers with enclosure, all with various make ups of the 10fen or 20fen rate to the United States, also of note are four covers paying unsealed circular rate (two with 2fen rate & two with 4fen rate to the USA, one with US 2¢ Postage Due), and last are two covers with Japanese stamp used in Manchuria.Many interesting frankings and markings are present, a few have had stamps removed and condition is mixed, however this is a wonderful lot for further study by the specialist.
