102   imageFalkland Islands, 1964, 6d "H.M.S. Glasgow" Vignette Error, o.g., never hinged, well centered, bright vibrant colors and exceptional freshness, Extremely Fine. Scott Nos. 151a. SG Nos. 216a  £40,000 ($64,740). A WONDERFUL NEVER HINGED EXAMPLE OF THIS POPULAR MAJOR 20TH CENTURY FALKLAND ISLANDS RARITY. When the error first came onto the market, it was first discovered by a North American collector in 1970. The owner had acquired the set in 1965 and noticed the Glasgow vignette on the two values yet believed at the time it to be normal. It was not until later, after reading an article in a British philatelic magazine, that he realized that the stamp was a major error. It is believed that only one sheet of 60 of this famous error had been produced. A note in the Stanley Gibbons catalog regarding this stamp states: "There have been seventeen reports of stamps showing this error, although it is believed that some of these may refer to the same example.". Odenweller certificate and statement of testing protocols. Estimate  $1,000 - 1,500. A MYSTERIOUS AND UNIQUE PROOF OF THE 2D CHALON HEAD ISSUE OF UNKNOWN ORIGIN AND DATE. According to Robert Odenweller, this proof could be from either the 1st and 2nd plates, but it is unlikely the former as they did not produce any color proofs from the first plate. The mostly likely periods would have been in New Zealand in 1855-56 and 1861-62. Tests where conducted on this proof at the Smithsonian National Postal Museum, concentrating primarily on X-ray fluorescence. Unfortunately no conclusive determination could be made as to the printer of this unique proof. (Image1)

LotNo. Symbol CatNo. Lot Description

Cooke, U.S.A." on quadruple rate legal size cover to his wife at Asbury Park, N.J., red magenta "Navy Pay Office, San Francisco." two-line handstamp, entered the U.S. mails bearing 2¢ red brown (210) tied by "San Francisco, Cal. 1886" cds, reverse with "Asbury Park N.J. Rec'd Nov 9" cds backstamp; some paper loss at lower right and reduced slightly at right affecting 2¢, Fine. Estimate  $1,000 - 1,500. A VERY RARE "OUTSIDE THE MAILS" NAVAL SHIP LETTER USAGE FROM APIA, SAMOA DURING THE MUNICIPALITY POST OFFICE PERIOD. The U.S.S. "Mohican" was a steam sloop of war, launched in December 1883 and sent to Callao, Peru in 1886 and then to Samoan waters to protect American interests from German political interference. This letter is unusual as it was apparently handled by the Navy Department and prepaid by their San Francisco Pay Office before entering the mails, unlike the example offered from the J.R. Hughes collection (Sale 44 Lot 2275, realized $2,875) that was sent by private ship without prepayment. We also offered the companion piece in our last Westpex auction. (Image1)
