The "Sultana" of 824 tons was built in 1848 at Cincinnati and ran New Orleans to Louisville in 5 days 12 hours, a record at that time.In 1842, the first Louisville to New Orleans route was contracted at $15,000 per year for 3 trips a week. Milgram No. 1330  Estimate $300 - 400. Between 1836 and 1863, six steamboats bearing the name "Sultana" were enrolled on Western Waters. This "Sultana" is the third of 527 tons built at Jeffersonville in 1843 and was at the time of her launch the largest steamboat of her day. (Image1)

Jun 8" integral 10¢ due handstamp and matching "Steam" straightline handstamp; top edge refolded and some wear, Very Fine. Milgram No. 134  Estimate $750 - 1,000. The "Bostona" was lying alongside of the "Louisiana" when she fatefully exploded. Her decks were strewed with the dead and dying, and her cabin presented a dreadful scene. The Bunker Hill No. 3 was built at New Albany Ind. in 1849 and went into service in the New Orleans to Louisville trade. Its first captain, Job Whipple, died aboard ship between Natchez and Memphis on March 25, 1849 and several other crew members also died of cholera. (Image1)

Milgram No. 358  Estimate $600 - 800. The "Dove" was running on the course of Route 5001 that was contracted by the trip. It is not known if this steamboat was running as a contract boat in April 1848 when this bill of lading was carried. The "Dove" of 237 tons was built at New Albany Ind. in 1848 and enrolled at Louisville that year and this must represent an early trip for this vessel. (Image1)

Smith.; Accompanied by two letters from Tracy W. Simpson discussing the cover. Scott $12,500. Towle No. O-21-d  Estimate $5,000 - 7,500. THE ONLY RECORDED FIRST DAY COVER OF THE 1851 3¢ ORANGE BROWN WITH A ROUTE AGENT MARKING. In his census in the 1851 Sesquicentennial book, Wilson Hulme records a total of 43 covers used on the July 1st 1851 first day of use. This is the only on-cover example recorded with a route agent marking, with all other examples originating in cities. This Cincinnati & Louisville Mail Line marking is scarce in itself, and its use was discontinued shortly after July 1851. The sender likely purchased the stamp at the Cincinnati post office and posted the letter on board the boat. (Image1)

Richey; with 1968 P.F. certificate, signed and guaranteed by Stanley B. Ashbrook. Towle No. O-21-g  Estimate $5,000 - 7,500. THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THIS STEAMBOAT ROUTE AGENT POSTMARK USED WITH THE 5¢1847 ISSUE. In July 1846, the U.S. Mail Line of Cincinnati was contracted at $3,850 a year for a daily service between Louisville and Cincinnati. The contract was renewed every four years until 1858. The U.S. Mail Line was using the General Pike and one other steamboat for this service. This rectangular route agent marking with manuscript day of month was used in 1851 only. There are a total of three recorded 1847 issue covers with this rare boxed route agent marking:1. Feb. 21, 1851, 5¢ 1847 on letter from Cincinnati to Indianapolis Ind., ex-Richey, the cover offered here.2. Apr. 5, 1851, 10¢ 1847 cancelled by manuscript with red postmark on partial letter.3. Apr. 22, 1851, 10¢ 1847 tied by blue postmark and grid on cover to Philadelphia Pa., PFC. (Image1)

A BEAUTIFUL AND IMPORTANT EXAMPLE OF THIS PACKET AND ROUTE AGENT COMBINATION USAGE, ONE OF ONLY THREE RECORDED EXAMPLES. Private purser markings only occur when applied before receipt by the route agent, or when the agent was also a member of the crew as apparently the case in this example.In July 1842, C.M. Strader, President of the U.S. Mail Line of Cincinnati contracted for the Cincinnati to Louisville route. Renewed every four years until 1870, in the period 1846 to 1858 the route was designated as 5032 with a daily trip each way paying $3,850 a year. Amongst the many steamboats owned by the company were the Telegraph No. 2 and 3. Both were used on Route 5032 as shown by combinations with the route agent cds.We have recorded the following three examples:1. March 19, 1852, Cincinnati Oh. to Nashville Tenn., ex-Milgram, the cover offered here.2. March 27, 1852, Cincinnati Oh. to Rome Ga., ex-John A. Eggen.3. Although no Star Route's were contracted for the Mississippi and Ohio River route between New Orleans and Cincinnati, many freight and passenger steamboats plied their trade between the two cities.The "Great Republic" of 1,727 tons built at Shousetown, Pennsylvania in 1866 was at its launch the largest steamboat on Western Waters. By 1869 her running costs had bankrupted her owners and the Master and Clerk were under bond for killing a number of the crew. She continued on the route until May 1871 under Capt. W.B. Donaldson. Capt. Allen Fowler and others bought her in February 1862 and although stated by "Way's Packet Directory" to have gone to the Attakapas River trade after the war, she clearly also ran north on the Mississippi to the Sunflower River. Milgram No. 1345  Estimate $1,000 - 1,500. The "Teche" of 62 tons was built at Cincinnati as the "Thomas W. Sugg" in 1860 and was enrolled at New Orleans as the "Teche". It was also named the "C.S.S. Tom Sugg" and "U.S.S. Tensas" during the War as both a Confederate and United States armed gunboat. After the war, it was sold to Capt. Trinidad for use as a contract mail carrier.Route 8188 was contracted in July 1858 and annulled on May 31st 1861. In November 1865, it was contracted for 8 months to Alfred Duperrior at $1,208 a year for 3 times a week service. This cover was carried by the "Teche" to Brashear for transfer to Route 8001 running on the New Orleans, Opelousas & Great Western Rail Road to Algiers located across the Mississippi River from New Orleans. Perry 1 bundle of pear trees", carried by water from Buffalo to Perrysburg where rated 12¢ due for 10¢ inland postage plus 2¢ ship fee; light edge toning and wear, F.-V.F., an early Great Lakes steamboat use. Estimate  $150 - 200. Although the first steamboat, the "Walk-on-the-Water" was put onto Lake Erie in 1819, examples of letters carried on these waters are rare before the 1840s. (Image1)

Jul 5" cds; minor paper loss on flap, Very Fine and choice example, ex-Tito, George Kramer. Estimate  $400 - 600. The Great Lake port post offices used Steam Boat handstamps on arriving mails in various designs, that for Detroit in the form of a ribbon. The use of such handstamps ceased by the mid 1860s. Crap at his home in Flint Mich., bearing 3¢ rose (65) tied by "Detroit Mich May 23" duplex; treated as a steamboat letter with 6¢ and 3¢ prepayment ignored; no flap, tiny edge tear, Very Fine. Estimate  $300 - 400. From July 1st 1863, steamboat letters were charged double the 3¢ letter rate and any prepayment on insufficiently prepaid letters was ignored. Henry H. 4380   image(Route 12717) Steamer Illinois, sharp strike of red oval handstamp on all-over illustrated advertising envelope of W.C. Duncan Mfg. Pale and Amber Ales etc. in Detroit Mich., addressed to Eagle Harbor Mich. that was located on the Keweenaw Peninsula in Lake Superior, bearing uncancelled 3¢ rose (65), small flaws, pencil "1862" docketing; some light toning at right corners, Very Fine and attractive. Milgram No. 636  Estimate $1,000 - 1,500. AN EXCEPTIONALLY RARE STEAMBOAT MARKING, MILGRAM WAS ABLE TO ONLY SHOW A TRACING IN HIS BOOK. In July 1858, Ebenezer War was contracted at $70 per round trip three times a week between Cleveland and Ontonagon, a distance of 640 miles. A steamboat regularly used on the route was the "Illinois" that ran under Ward's Lake Superior Line. (Image1)

4382   image(Route 12717) Steamer Illinois, Sault, perfect strike of "Aug 12 1864" cds on light buff cover addressed in pencil to Pottsville Pa., bearing 3¢ rose (65), short perfs at right, tied by open circular grid and indistinct Mich. cds adjacent, carried from Sault by the Illinois to Cleveland where placed on the rails via Pittsburgh to Philadelphia, Very Fine, Illustrated in Milgram on page 634., ex-Floyd Risvold. Milgram No. 634  Estimate $750 - 1,000. The "Illinois" was a side-wheeler of 926 tons built at Detroit in 1853 and abandoned in 1869.In July 1863, Ebenezer Ward was contracted to operate routes Cleveland and Chicago to Otonagon on the shore of Lake Superior. He arranged for name-of-boat datestamps to be used bearing the names of the port that a letter was put onto the boat at. Unusually, the payment was made on a weekly basis at $200 for three round trips per week. (Image1)

Estimate  $1,500 - 2,000. Hiram Favor of Eastport Me. was appointed a letter carrier for the mails between Boston and St. John with stops at Portland and Eastport. Favor ran the service between 1849 and 1859 using the steamship "Admiral" throughout. Only when on its annual dry docking were other vessels used. (Image1)

Estimate  $750 - 1,000. Favor's Express was based in Boston and operated from 1850 two sister vessels, the "Alabama" and the "Florida", both of 1,261 gross tons built at New York. The company served the express route to St. John, New Brunswick calling at Providence and Eastport, Maine. A company cachet was applied to loose letters handled on the route and there was a 5¢ charge made for letters travelling between St. John and U.S. post offices. (Image1)

Henry Chauncey, blue circular handstamp on folded letter datelined "Bogota 7 Julio 1875" from the Lanman & Kemp correspondence to New York, black "New-York, Due 5 Cts., Oct 24" cds; two light vertical file folds, Very Fine, The listing example in Milgram on page 340. Milgram No. 596A  Estimate $500 - 750. THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THE "HENRY CHAUNCEY" SHIP CACHET. The Pacific Mail Steam Ship Company operated fleets on both the west coast and east coast routes for their contracts for the San Francisco to New York mails. Although the contract ended in 1869, the PMSSC continued to use the steamships for the trans-Panama business with South America. The "Henry Chauncey" of 2,656 tons was built by William H. Webb's yard at New York in 1864 and entered service on the New York to Aspinwall route in November 1865. (Image1)

Steamship '10' Aug 3" arrival cds, Very Fine, Only eleven examples of this vessel cachet have been recorded, nine being struck on reverse. Milgram No. 434  Estimate $300 - 400. In 1865, Waydell & Co. were awarded the contract for the post road from New York via Bermuda to Santiago de Cuba. The single screw steamer "Fah Kee" of 699 tons built at Greenpoint N.Y. was employed on this service from October 1865 to mid 1868. (Image1)

4400   image(New York via Bermuda to Cuba) U.S. Mail Steamship Fah Kee, bold strike of "Feb 17, 1866, St. Jago" shield handstamp on flap of folded letter datelined "Cuba y Feb. 16 1866" from the Lanman & Kemp correspondence to New York City, Fah Kee arrived in New York on Feb. 25th (N.Y. Times) and black "Steamship 10" cent due rating circular handstamp, fresh and Very Fine. Milgram No. 434  Estimate $750 - 1,000. On August 10th 1865 Capt. John Sterling purchased for $65,000 the wooden screw steamer "Fah Kee" from the U.S. Quartermasters. He contracted with New York's Waydell & Co. to run a regular mail packet from New York to St. Jago de Cuba. The contract with Waydell was run under the provisions of the Foreign Mails act of 1845 but only lasted three years as opposed to the normal ten years of the Act. The vessel was sold to the Bermuda authorities in 1868. (Image1)
