1910-1913 WASHINGTON-FRANKLIN COILS
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
41 c 386 image#386, 2c Carmine coil, perf. 12 horiz., rather attractive appearing single that is well centered with bright color, tied to cover to Cambridge, N.Y. by neat Pittsfield, Mass. machine flag cancel, dated December 9, 1910, the earliest documented usage, backstamped the same day; edge tears in opening barely affecting the stamp but not affecting this cover's very fine appearance; a very early date for any of the single line watermarked stamps; 2001 APS certificate; ex-Hart. (Image) Est. 1,000-1,500

SOLD for $800.00
Will close during Public Auction
42 c 387 image#387, 1c Green coil, perf. 12 vert., attractive single, well centered with rich color, tied to 1c Green on white postal entire (#U400) by Seattle, Wash. machine cancel being the November 5, 1910 earliest documented usage, posted to San Francisco, stamp lifted and replaced for identification, very fine and exceptionally choice; a decidedly scarce coil issue used within five days of its reported November 1st issuance date; 1990 PF certificate; ex-Hadley. (Image) Est. 2,000-3,000

SOLD for $2,100.00
Will close during Public Auction
43 c 388 image#388, 2c Carmine coil, perf. 12 vert., choice single of this exceedingly rare coil issue, intense rich color and well centered, tied to a crisp clean window envelope of the H.A. Meldrum Co., January 4, 1911 earliest documented usage with the stamp neatly tied by a full Buffalo, N.Y. machine cancel, stamp lifted for positive identification and hinged in place, very fine; the Single Line Watermarked Two Cent Washington Coil is one of the most difficult of the coil issues in all its forms, even used singles are major rarities despite their more modest catalog value (we have only offered a total of two over ten years), and covers are especially rare and desired, as it is frequently much easier to ascertain the authenticity of this frequently faked coil; the cover offered here is exceptional in its rarity and condition and unique in its earliest documented usage status; 1998 APS certificate; ex-Hart. (Image) Est. 4,000-5,000

SOLD for $5,000.00
Will close during Public Auction
44 c 389 image#389, 3c Deep violet, Ty. I, "Orangeburg Coil", perf. 12 vert., an especially fresh and bright example of this major coil rarity, exhibiting the deep violet color that is typical of the genuine stamps, tied to an unusually clean bluish green cover of Bell & Company Incorporated Manufacturing Chemists of Orangeburg, New York, March 8, 1911 earliest documented usage, featuring a fully printed "Orangeburg, N.Y./Mar 8 1911" machine cancel, posted to Berwyn, Pa. and backstamped there, the stamp after lifting for examination was found to have small paper flaws and wrinkles as nearly all examples have due to the bulky nature of the pharmaceutical enclosures, still a very fine and exceedingly attractive cover. The Orangeburg coil was specifically issued by the Post Office Department for the use of the Bell Pharmaceutical Co. to mail their samples of antacid to doctors around the country. Apparently no collectors were aware of the issue because of its commercial use by this one firm. The samples were actually quite bulky and the stamp paid the triple domestic fourth class (samples of merchandise) rate. Cancels also show that they were run through the first class canceling machine. Both of these factors explain why nearly all of the few known covers are wrinkled and soiled, a condition that usually affects the stamps as well. Furthermore, because of all of these circumstances, very few covers or even stamps from this bulk mailing were saved as such items were routinely thrown away, making for one of the rarest coils issues in United States philately. The cover offered here stands out among the very small population of only about fifteen covers in two ways. First and foremost, this is the earliest documented usage being used in early March within a very short period of when the stamp was supposedly issued in late January. Many of the known covers are used months later. Secondly, this is one of the most attractive of the covers, retaining its blue green color and lacking the usual soiling and strong wrinkles that are found on others, plus the stamp is bright and attractive. A great cover rarity of immense historical significance to the Washington-Franklin collector. Signed by Ward and accompanied by a clear 1998 PF certificate; ex-Ward, Southgate. (Image) Est. 30,000-40,000

47 c 392 image#392, 1c Green coil, perf. 8 1/2 vert., exceptionally scarce pair with fine centering and rich color, tied to December 16, 1910 earliest documented usage cover, attractive Washington, D.C. machine cancel, two minor cover edge tears, otherwise a very fine cover; this cover is posted to the famous Detroit collector, John Kay, who had Washington connections in the Post Office Department, this may well explain this very early usage that is within five days of the supposed December 12th issuance date; clear 2001 APS certificate. (Image) Est. 2,000-3,000

SOLD for $1,800.00
Will close during Public Auction

Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
50 c 405 image#405, 1c Green, attractive single with deep color and sharp impression, tied to multicolor picture post card showing an Indian squaw and pony of the Crow tribe, most unusual February 2, 1912 earliest documented usage, stamp tied by Crow Agency, Mont. handstamped duplex with clear date, normal postal wear to the card, otherwise very fine; the listed issuance date of this stamp has been listed as February, 1912 making it hard for an earlier usage to be found and also making this a very likely candidate for being a first day cover, this along with its marvelously esoteric usage produce a wonderful exhibition piece for the Washington-Franklin collector; 1999 PF certificate. SOLD for $2,800.00
