63 c 422 image#422, 50c Violet, double line watermark, a marvelous single-franking cover, the stamp is especially attractive being exceptionally well centered and possessing a lovely strong pastel color, tied to attractive blue registered return-receipt cover to England by boxed "Vera Cruz, Mexico/U.S. Mail Agency" handstamp, with registry c.d.s. of this foreign United States post office on the reverse, this being the October 31, 1914 earliest documented usage, New York transit oval on the reverse as well, the stamp has been lifted for identification and hinged in place, a portion of the back flap is missing, not affecting any markings, very fine; this 50c high value is believed to be the only certified example on cover, then to have it be a single franking used out of the U.S. Mail Agency during the occupation of Vera Cruz, Mexico and registered to an overseas destination is an incredible usage in its own right, plus being the earliest documented usage makes this a fantastic exhibition cover for the finest of Washington-Franklin collections; 2000 PF certificate. (Image) Est. 5,000-7,500

SOLD for $10,500.00
Will close during Public Auction
64 O 423 image#423, $1.00 Violet brown, bottom sheet-margin vertical strip of three, along with 50c Violet (#422), 30c Orange red (#420) and 10c Orange Yellow (#416), all mostly well centered, especially the $1.00 and 50c values, tied by Washington, D.C. oval pmks. on 320mm x 180mm large piece of a registered package which is apparently the full front, sent to the Federal Reserve Agent in San Francisco from the Controller of the Currency, violet "Washington, D.C./Jul 15, 1915/ Registered" c.d.s., making this the July 15, 1915 earliest documented usage of the scarce $1.00 value, very fine and impressive. One of the little recognized attributes of the United States Postal system was the amazing security that the federal government established in its registered mail system, prosecuting vigorously theft and robbery. Even today one of the most secure means of shipment is by registered mail with its detailed checks and balances to insure delivery. The government has long made use of this service shipping currency, as was quite likely the case with this package, as well as stamps, coinage and even gold. This front demonstrates the legitimate usage of high denomination stamps. It is certainly a far more desirable commercial usage of the dollar value than the more usual parcel tag usage. An impressive showpiece which will greatly enhance an exhibition collection of earliest documented usages or Washington-Franklin heads; 2000 APS certificate; ex-Siskin. . (Image) Est. 7,500-10,000

SOLD for $4,500.00
