1904 "8 cts" Surcharge
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
503 ogbl 14a image#14a, "8 cts" on 50c Bister brown, "Zone" in antique type, single variety contained in a right margin imprint block of twelve (4x3), the variety being the second stamp in the second row (position 48 in the sheet), the block also happens to show all three types of the "8" overprint including the scarce type "C" at position 50, nicely centered, full fresh o.g., some hinge reinforcing and some perf. separation between third and fourth columns, very fine; an extremely rare variety, as only 25 examples of the antique "Zone" were printed, and even the Plass and Drucker collections lacked this stamp; it is particularly rare and desirable to have it in a large multiple such as this; ex-Brooks (CZSG #14a, 14.12, 14.13). (Image) 1,582.50+

SOLD for $1,300.00
Closing..May-30, 04:00 PM
504 nhbl 14b image#14b, 8c on 50c Bister brown, "Canal Zone" inverted, remarkably choice mint block of four, exceptionally well centered, wonderfully fresh and crisp, pristine o.g., never hinged, extremely fine; only two sheets of 100 each were printed with the inverted overprint, making a gem quality block such as this especially rare; 1969 APS certificate for a block of eight, this being the middle block; ex-Helme and Drucker (CZSG #14b). (Image) as hinged sings 1,700.00

SOLD for $1,500.00
Closing..May-30, 04:00 PM
505 ogbl 14g image#14g, "8 cts" on 50c Bister brown, "8" omitted, left margin block of four, with the error occurring at position 1, in addition, the "Panama" overprint is shifted to the left, causing two "Panama"'s to be at the right, o.g., trivial h.r., fine; this is the listing example of this error and the only example with the "8" truly missing, the other five examples listed in Canal Zone Stamps are due to a shifted overprint; certainly one of the most important errors from the 1904-06 Issues; 1967 PF certificate; ex-Plass, Drucker and illustrated in Canal Zone Stamps (CZSG #14g). (Image) 4,250.00+

SOLD for $4,500.00
Closing..May-30, 04:00 PM

"Panama" reading up, a select quality example of the rarest regularly issued stamp from Canal Zone, far better centering than normally encountered, strong rich color, the original gum is much fresher than usually found, with only the slightest hint of tropicalization (most have quite disturbed o.g.), very fine; in superior condition to the vast majority of the 500 issued; photocopy of a 1974 PF certificate for a block of four, this being the top left stamp (CZSG #15). (Image) 2,600.00

SOLD for $1,600.00
Closing..May-30, 04:00 PM
507 og 15 var. image#15 var., "8 cts" on 50c Bister brown, 13mm "Panama" reading up, Colman type "C" surcharge, a magnificent mint example of this rare overprint type, which only occurs in four positions in the sheet of 100, exceedingly well centered within lavishly large margins, intense color and impression, full clean original gum, lightly hinged, extremely fine; this is the finest example of the mere twenty type "C" surcharges printed; cataloged as the normal type; 1967 PF certificate specifically identifying the surcharge type; ex-Dunaway (CZSG #15.5). (Image) 2,600.00+

SOLD for $2,300.00
Closing..May-30, 04:00 PM

(Image) 1,590.00+

514 og 21a image#21a, 2c Red and black, "Canal" only, the error being the right stamp in a horizontal strip of three, probably caused by foreign matter between the overprinting plate and the sheet, as there is an albino impression but it is completely uninked, tropicalized o.g., very fine; this is the unique example of this error, making this one of the keys to completing all of the Canal Zone errors; 1969 APS certificate; ex-Plass and illustrated in Canal Zone Stamps (detail) (CZSG #21a). (Image) 4,000.00

SOLD for $7,000.00

518 og 23a image#23a, 2c Red and black, imperforate between, a striking showpiece top margin imprint block of four, excellent centering, bright fresh colors, full o.g., lightly hinged, extremely fine; this error comes from two sheets of 100 where the center vertical row of perforations was omitted, therefore only two imprint blocks such as this are even possible; ex-Drucker (CZSG #23a). (Image) 4,000.00+

SOLD for $2,400.00
Closing..May-30, 04:00 PM
519 O 23g image#23g, 2c Carmine red and black, Center and "Canal Zone" Inverted reading up, a most attractive used example of this immensely rare Canal Zone inverted center, being one of only nine examples recorded, nicely centered, vivid color in the characteristic carmine lake shade, small tear and minor creasing, very fine appearance; apparently one sheet of the inverted center was issued, but the error was not discovered until several years later after all were used on commercial mail, consequently all of the eight off cover examples (one is known on cover) are faulty to some degree, this example actually being one of the finest appearing; an important stamp for either the advanced Canal Zone specialist or for the collector of inverted centers of the world; ex-Helme (CZSG #23g). (Image) 5,000.00

SOLD for $6,250.00
Closing..May-30, 04:00 PM
