Canal Zone continued...

1909-1915 Issues
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
521 O 31a image#31a, 1c Dark green and black, Inverted Center and "Canal Zone" reading down, a magnificent used example of one of the most famous of all of the Canal Zone errors, which, although issued in 1911, was not discovered until 1932, when George W. Wirth removed an example from a postcard, a second example was found in the 1950's, and a third (badly defective) copy was reported in 1969, this example was the last of the four known examples to be discovered, having been found by a dealer in 1979, this is by far the best centered example of the four, plus it possesses deep rich color on bright paper, violet Cristobal c.d.s. postmark, faint crease not mentioned on accompanying certificate, the perforations at right are scissors separated typical of the handmade booklet panes, which is also a trait of the other three examples, making it likely that the error sheet was produced in this way, which makes it even more astonishing that the error was not noticed, very fine; the most attractive example extant of this world-class inverted center rarity; clear 1979 APS certificate; ex-Helme (CZSG #31a).
