UNITED STATES FIRST DAY COVERS continued...

1922-1935 Regular Issues continued...
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
1101 F 585-87 image#585, 586, 587, 4c Yellow brown, 5c Blue and 6c Red orange, each with central fancy rosette cancel on registered combination first day cover, with "Washington, D.C./Registered/Apr 4 1925" violet c.d.s. cancels on the reverse, stamps not tied but certainly proper to the cover, very fine; this is one of the few combination covers that was not made by one of the dealers that serviced first day covers in this period, explaining why the stamps are not tied; this three stamp combination is noted but not listed in the Mellone/Scott catalog, we have seen only one other with only these three stamps, which was serviced by Hammelman, and our observation is that this is much scarcer than the later combination of the 7c, 8c and 9c values. (Image) Est. 750-1,000

SOLD for $950.00
Closing..Mar-08, 09:00 AM
1102 F 587, 618 image#587, 618, 6c Red orange and 1c Lexington-Concord combination first day cover, two singles of the 1c Lexington-Concord, all are well centered and tied to air mail cover with "The Home of the Postage Stamp" corner card by "New York, N.Y./G.P.O./Apr 4/1925" duplexes, backstamped Chicago, very fine; New York is an unofficial first day city for both issues, and the combination is very scarce as few covers were made combining regular issues with commemoratives. (Image) Est. 300-400

SOLD for $260.00
Closing..Mar-08, 09:00 AM
1103 F 588-90 image#588-90, 7c Black, 8c Olive green and 9c Rose, three stamp combination first day cover, tied to C.E. Nickles corner card cover by "Washington/D.C./May 29/1925" duplexes, backstamped San Francisco, very fine and attractive. (Image) 300.00

SOLD for $250.00

1104 F 588-90 image#588-90, 7c Black, 8c Olive green and 9c Rose, three stamp combination first day cover, bright fresh stamps, tied to air mail cover by "Washington/D.C./May 29/1925" duplexes, very fine combination. (Image) 300.00

1105 F 588-90, 628 image#588-90, 628, Four stamp combination first day cover, on the same day that the 7c, 8c and 9c Regular issue, rotary press perf. 10, were issued, the 5c Ericsson commemorative was also issued, all four of these stamps, including a bottom sheet-margin plate no. 18595 single of the 5c Ericsson, are tied to first day cover by "Washington/D.C./May 29/1925" duplexes, serviced by A.E. Gorham with his typed address, stamps are artistically arranged on the cover, very fine and attractive; these three regular issues are desirable and not often encountered in combination, but they are not rare, however any one of the regular issues with the 5c Ericsson is very scarce, and we know of only one other cover with all four stamps (pictured on page 32 of Jack V. Harvey's First Day Covers of the Regular Postage Issues of 1922-35), the one offered here being the nicer of the two, an important first day cover rarity. (Image) Est. 1,000-1,500

SOLD for $2,400.00
Closing..Mar-08, 09:00 AM
1106 F 588-90, 628 image#588-90, 628, Three different regular issue combination first day covers, each in combination with the 5c Ericsson commemorative, all are matching locally run special delivery covers, with 7c Black, 8c Olive green and 9c Rose, each tied along with 5c Ericsson to separate covers by Washington/D.C./May 29/1925" duplexes, stamps are all well centered, couple trivial toned perf. tips on each commemorative, otherwise very fine; this combination of regular issues with commemorative is very scarce as very few of these were made or preserved, a matched set is a marvelous opportunity for the collector exhibiting these issues. (Image) Est. 750-1,000

SOLD for $1,700.00
Closing..Mar-08, 09:00 AM
1107 EDU 595 image#595, 2c Carmine coil waste, fine single tied to cover by "New York, N.Y. Sta. Y/Jun 29/1923" machine cancel, this represents the earliest documented usage on cover, this cover was offered in our May 30, 1996 Lawrence S. Fisher Collection auction, at that time it had pre-dated the previous earliest date of 11/17/23 by a considerable amount, since then an off-cover pair has been discovered with a March 31, 1923 date, however this still remains the earliest documented cover, and any #595 on cover is scarce, cover a bit wrinkled and opened roughly at right just sparing the stamp, fine; ex-Fisher. (Image) Est. 500-750

SOLD for $250.00
Closing..Mar-08, 09:00 AM

1109 F 598, U481 image#598, U481, 1 1/2c Brown coil on 1 1/2c Brown on white entire, two coil strips of four, centered into the perforations at right, tied to registered combination first day cover by "New York/PO" ovals, "New York (G.P.O.), N.Y./Registered/Mar 19 1925" c.d.s. on the reverse, serviced by Edward C. Worden, very fine cover; not only is this a first day for both the coil stamp and the entire, but this is an unofficial city as well. (Image) Est. 200-300

SOLD for $475.00
Closing..Mar-08, 09:00 AM
1110 F 599 image#599, 2c Carmine coil, perf. 10 vert., attractive single tied to Philip H. Ward first day cover by "Washington D.C./Jan 15/1923" machine cancel, neat typed address and "First Day Cover" handstamp that was sometimes applied to his covers, very fine; January 15th is considered the first day of issuance for this stamp though there are a couple of very rare covers prior to this date, Philip Ward seems to have been the only one servicing first day covers for this coil because they were not available at the philatelic window, through his "inside connections" he found a roll at the wholesale window and made 37 covers, making this a very scarce first day cover. (Image) 1,400.00

SOLD for $1,300.00
Closing..Mar-08, 09:00 AM

SOLD for $250.00
Closing..Mar-08, 09:00 AM
1113 F 620-21 image#620-621, 2c-5c Norse American cplt., set on seven May 18, 1925 first day covers, representing all seven of the official cities, each with first Roessler cachet at top left (Planty #1), Washington cover with very slight toning, otherwise very fine; an attractive set of the first cachet from one of the founding fathers of cachet making. (Image) 2,100.00

(Image) 300.00+

SOLD for $140.00
Closing..Mar-08, 09:00 AM
1117 F 632, 640 image#632, 640, 1c Green and 8c Olive green, tied to very fresh combination first day cover by two exceptionally clear "Washington/D.C./Jun 10/1927" duplexes, neat handstamped address of Milton T. Mauck, who serviced the cover, extremely fine combination cover. (Image) 300.00

(Image) 350.00

SOLD for $500.00
Closing..Mar-08, 09:00 AM
1119 F 634EE image#634EE, 2c Carmine, Experimental Electric Eye, bottom right corner sheet-margin single showing the electric eye marginal markings, tied to attractive and scarce first day cover by "Washington, D.C./Mar 28/1935" machine cancel, serviced by A. M. Daniels, who made several of these covers with various cancels, neat typed cachet under the stamp and initialed and dated by him in ms., very fine; this 2c value was used for experimenting with photoelectric cells for improving the centering in the perforation process, since this was not, as far as the Bureau was concerned, a new issue of stamps, they were simply distributed to post offices to fill small orders, they went on sale at the Philatelic Agency on March 28, 1935 and the few covers that were made on that date are considered to be first day covers, in theory their usage in other post offices started earlier and a very few are known with earlier dates, but one thing that keeps them from being discovered is the necessity of selvage with electric eye markings to distinguish them from the normal 2c stamp, the few that philatelists prepared with the proper selvage are quite elusive. (Image) Est. 500-750

SOLD for $575.00
Closing..Mar-08, 09:00 AM
