1129 F 697, 699 image#697, 699, 17c Black and 25c Blue green, sheet-margin singles of each tied to a very rare combination first day cover by unofficial "Brooklyn/N.Y./Jul 25/1931" duplex cancels, typed address to W.R. M'Coy, one of the individuals responsible for the few covers that were posted at this post office with either 17c or 25c values, return address of M.G. Johl, sent by special delivery with all the attendant markings and backstamps that go with that service, plus two registry c.d.s. on the reverse that have been marked out with blue crayon, apparently applied in error, slightly reduced at top, very fine; most of the stamps of the last rotary press issue were sent to various post offices at about the same time as they were issued at the Philatelic Agency, but no announcement was made so that collectors could make covers, the Philatelic Agency covers for nearly all the stamps of this issue therefore stand as the earliest documented usages, there are a very few exceptions where stamps could have been used earlier, these Brooklyn usages of the 17c and 25c are a case in point, only through the efforts of several well known philatelists, H.M. Southgate, W.R. M'Coy and probably Max G. Johl, were 26 covers, and maybe a few more by others, posted on this earlier date, the vast majority of these were individual values on cover, which are very rare by virtue of this small number, but even rarer are covers with both values, to our knowledge this is one of two known covers, the other is pictured in First Day Covers of the Regular Postage Issue of 1922-1935 by Jack V. Harvey, and was sold in our September 1996 Unicover Corporation Museum Collection auction for $4,500.00, plus the 10% buyer's premium; an exceptionally rare cover that is indispensible for the specialized collector of these issues; ex-Baron. 1135 F 551/723 #551/723, Extensive balance of the David H. Ahl first day cover collection, concentrating on the regular issues of 1922-1935, there is a total of 188 covers, with the vast majority being first day covers or early and unusual usages where first day covers are not available, the issues that are most significant include the flat plate and both rotary press issues, plus imperforates and coils, most are single stamp usages on uncacheted envelopes as is the norm for this period, some cachets are present in the later years, many are covers that catalog in the $50.00-100.00 range, and typically they bear Washington, D.C. postmarks, but there are others from official cities for the issue and some unofficial cities with premium value as well, in the flat plate issues we note six different unofficial cities for the 1/2c Nathan Hale, three different for the 1c Franklin and five different for the 3c Lincoln, plus scattered isolated unofficial cities for other values, a number of different first day cover makers are represented, the most prevalent include Edward C. Worden, Henry Hammelman, Philip H. Ward, Albert E. Gorham and others, there are some non-first day covers scattered throughout including such items as $1.00 and $2.00 values on parcel card and $5.00 on Round-the-World Zeppelin flight cover, there are also a small number of commemoratives such as the 2c Harding Memorial issues, "Hawaii" ovpts. and a few "Kans".-"Nebr." ovpts. that are related to, but not normally associated with the 1922-35 Regular issues, condition varies but overall most covers are quite clean and fine-very fine; the first day cover collector will want to examine this collection carefully as there are many desirable items to be found throughout. Modern Issues

1136 F 1203 var. image#1203 var., 4c Dag Hammarskjold, yellow background inverted, single tied to unaddressed first day cover by "New York/N.Y./Oct. 23 1962/First Day of Issue" postmark, this is the first day of issue for the original issue of this commemorative and not the special printing with inverted yellow, Scott #1204, that was released about a month later on November 16, 1962, the significance of this is that this cover bears an example of the original printing with a true error inverted color, rather than the intentionally printed issuance that so many are familiar with, the stamp is well centered and shows the error well, cover is very fresh and extremely fine; the saga of this error marks the low point in Post Office Department/collector relations, when it became known that an inverted error sheet had been found, the Post Office Department proceeded to purposely print this issue with inverted yellow producing over forty million stamps with the express purpose of destroying the value of the original error, they certainly were successful in doing so on the mint stamps, but the handful of dated first day covers, of which this is one, establishes for a certainty the original error, extremely rare and both under-valued and under-appreciated as this is an inverted error on the par with the small number of other similar inverted errors that have occured in United States stamps over the years, this cover was last offered in the 1995 Rarities of the World Sale of Robert A Siegel Auction Galleries, Inc. where it realized $2,400.00 plus 10% buyer's premium; handstamped on reverse "Genuine First Day Cover/American First Day Cover Soc./ Certificate No. 463" and accompanied by a 1986 PF certificate.
