765 c 26 imageFirst Day of Hostilities, a superb strike of a "Charleston S.C. /APR 12, 1861/Paid" c.d.s. ties a 3c Dull red (#26) to cover on the very day the bombardment of Fort Sumter in Charlestown Harbor began. On April 10, 1861, Brig. Gen. Beauregard, in command of the provisional Confederate forces at Charlestown, demanded the surrender of the Union garrison of Fort Sumter. Garrison commander Anderson refused and on April 12, Confederate batteries opened fire on the fort, which was unable to reply effectively. The following day Major Anderson surrendered Fort Sumter, whose bombardment marked the opening engagement of the Civil War. An extraordinarily remarkable postal history item, as well as a Confederate usage of U.S. stamps, attractive embossed F.D. Fanning & Co. merchant corner card, very fine; an item that can not be overlooked by the serious Civil War exhibitor or collector. (Image) Est. 500-750

767 c 1 image#1, 5c Green, two singles tied by an exceptionally clear and centrally struck "Mobile, Ala./July 23 (1862)" c.d.s. to cover addressed to "C.M. Morfit, Ram Arkansas, Vicksburg, Miss." The "Arkansas" was a Confederate ironclad ram commissioned in the spring of 1862, she terrorized Union ships and gunboats near Vicksurg, Miss. for several months during that year. This "Confederate Monster", the scorn of U.S. Admiral Farragut, inflicted heavy damage on the entire Union fleet near Vicksburg on July 15, 1862 before she was intentionally scuttled and set fire to on August 6th. Morfit was the Assistant Surgeon serving on the boat; fascinating 1965 Confederate Philatelist article enclosed, cover has light horiz. crease not affecting stamps, fine-very fine; an extremely scarce and important historical artifact of the Confederacy, possibly the only recorded Confederate ironclad item of record. Cobb was a younger brother of Howell Cobb who served on his staff at Quincy, stamp tied by indistinct Athens, Ga. c.d.s., with an additional strike at left, sealed back flap tear which just extends to top margin of cover, but does not detract from the overall appearance of this very fine and rare Ten Cent "Frame Line" cover; signed Stanley B.
