Yvert #17a, 51, 1896 "½ ANNA" surcharge on 5c green and 1902 "2½ ANNAS" surcharge on 25c blue, horizontal pair and three singles of former and single of latter, all tied by "Zansibar/26 Mars, 04" datestamps to cover with "Consular Service, U.S.A." imprint to New York City, French transit backstamp, very fine (Scott #17, 43).The cover includes the original enclosure from the American Consul Mason Mitchell with fantastic contents about a trip to Somaliland and Lillian Russell which reads in part: "It was a most interesting journey. First it has not as yet been contaminated by white men; it is in a primitive state and redolent with the customs of the Arabs and Somolies. In the town of Barawa where I landed, there is but one white, i.e. the Italian Resident. He gave me a guard as soon as I landed which remained with me all the time I was in town. I went inland 25 miles to have a look at the country and do a little shooting. He provided as an escort 25 Bedouin Arab Soldiers, 20 armed Somolies besides 3 camels, 3 donkeys and boys for them. You know the Mad Mullah is at war with the English, he has stirred up the natives, who are naturally treacherous and most fanatical, so that no christian is safe. As you know if the Mohammedan can get his knife or spear between your ribs, he is sure going to Heaven and enjoying the houris paradise. Well I got through allright and killed lion, leopard, gazelle and smaller game." About Lillian Russell he writes: "Should so like to hear from Miss Russell. The two pictures she kindly gave me are framed in my house and encomiums of praise that are bestowed on them should cause her ears to turn scarlet. Not only European officials but the Arabs are most enthusiastic. A few years ago she would have lasted but a short time in Zanzibar before she would have been in the palace of the Sultan." (Image)
