1069 c ImageCharleston S.C. Prison. Prisoner-of-war cover from an unidentified prison in Charleston S.C. to Clark County O., endorsed "Prisoners Letter Charleston S.C." at left and with "Exd. HHR" examiner's marking (Capt. Hugh Hamilton Rogers, Provost Marshal), entered mails with "Port Royal S.C. Aug. 20, 1864" double-circle datestamp and "Due 3" handstamp, Very Fine, research by Galen Harrison (his letter accompanies) failed to pinpoint which prison held the writer, L. Paris Horney, who was a member of the 110th Ohio Infantry; while he may have been one of the so-called "Union 600" there were about 1,800 Union prisoners sent from Macon Ga. through Charleston in three different batches, with 2008 C.S.A. certificate (Image)

1070 c ImageColumbia S.C. Prison. Buff legal-size cover addressed to "Lt. Col. R.W. Martin Comdg. Prison Columbia S.C.", endorsed "O.B." at top, carried outside the mails, folded at left and edgewear at right, otherwise Very Fine, Lt. Col. Rawley White Martin of the 53rd Virginia Volunteers (Armistead's Brigade) was wounded during Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg and was by certain accounts the first man over the wall during that climactic battle, he survived and lived nearly another 50 years, after three months at the field hospital at Gettysburg he was transferred to Fort McHenry in Baltimore and then to Point Lookout before he was exchanged in May 1864, after being exchanged he served as director of Columbia S.C. prisons from 1864-65, the Martin papers are held at the University of North Carolina Libraries and many are available on UNC's website (http://www2.lib.unc.edu/mss/inv/m/Martin,Rawley_White.html), ex Dr. Brandon (Image)
