EXTREMELY FINE GEM. AN ABSOLUTELY STUNNING MINT NEVER-HINGED GUIDE LINE PAIR OF THE 1912 2-CENT HORIZONTAL COIL, SCOTT 413. THIS SUPERB LINE PAIR HAS BEEN AWARDED THE PERFECT GRADE OF GEM 100 BY P.S.E. -- THE HIGHEST GRADE AWARDED WITH NO EQUALS.
The 1910-13 Perf 8-1/2 coils were a response by the Post Office Department to the tendency of the 1908-10 Perf 12 coils to break apart in production or handling. The larger gauge did indeed prevent inadvertent separation, but the change went too far as many users found that they accidentally tore the stamps when separating. The Perf 10 coils, released beginning in 1914, were the compromise and they remained in production throughout the rest of the Washington-Franklin period. The 2c Carmine "2 Cents" Perf 8-1/2 coil was released in March 1912. It is very elusive as a Mint N.H. guide line pair in superb grades.
With 2005 P.S.E. certificate (Gem 100; SMQ $11,000.00). This is the only guide line pair of Scott 413 to achieve this perfect grade, with none higher. Only four others even exceed a 90 grade (two at 98 and two at 95) (Image)

With 2016 P.S.E. certificate (Superb 98 Jumbo; SMQ $2,850.00). This is the highest grade awarded and it is shared by no others (Image)
