3122° nhbl ImageGREAT BRITAIN, 1902, 1sh Dull Green & Carmine, I.R. Official (SG Specialised MO5; SG O24; Scott O23). Top selvage block of eight, Mint N.H., bright and bold colors, excellent centering, selvage with small faults and position 6 with small stain at bottom (not mentioned on accompanying certificate)

EXTREMELY FINE MULTIPLE OF THE ONE-SHILLING KING EDWARD VII I.R. OFFICIAL IN NEVER-HINGED CONDITION. A STUNNING SHOWPIECE AND THE LARGEST MULTIPLE WE ARE AWARE OF IN PRIVATE HANDS.

The King Edward VII 1sh I.R. Official, according to Wiseman, was issued to bridge the gap between the values of the 6p and 5sh. Interestingly, when issued, there was no particular use for this denomination. Most of the known used examples are registered mail out of Manchester for heavier internal and external mails.

Ex Baillie. With 1978 B.P.A. certificate. SG as two hinged blocks of four £38,500. (Image)

3123° nh ImageGREAT BRITAIN, 1902, 5sh Bright Carmine, I.R. Official, Raised Stop After "R" (SG Specialised MO6a; SG O25a; Scott O24a). Top right corner selvage single, Mint N.H., marvelously well-centered with wide margins, radiant color on bright paper, selvage with small faults of absolutely no consequence, small pencil note on gum

EXTREMELY FINE. A GEM CORNER SELVAGE SINGLE OF THE 5-SHILLING KING EDWARD VII I.R. OFFICIAL WITH RAISED PERIOD. A SCARCE VARIETY ON AN ALREADY RARE STAMP.

The Raised Stop variety occurred on the top row of each pane. The presence of the sheet margin indicates this came from the last position of the first row. The variety was never corrected and is therefore known on all the Queen Victoria and King Edward VII Shilling denominations. According to records listed in Wiseman, only 69 sheets were printed with the variety occurring 16 times in a sheet of 240. Considering natural attrition from use and the already scarce availability of unused Officials, it is unlikely that more than a small handful of examples with this variety are available to collectors today.

With 1986 Brandon and 1989 B.P.A. certificates. Catalogued as hinged. SG £50,000. Scott $42,500.00 (Image)
