Essays and Proofs: Plate Proofs
Lot Sym. Lot Description
59 Ebl ImageNational Bank Note Co., 1c-90c 1861 First Designs and Colors, Plate Proofs on India (62BP3/72-E7e). Complete set of eight values in blocks of four (2c and 15c were issued later so they don't exist as First Designs), brilliant colors, several showing plate layout lines, 1c in Indigo with some India paper thinning at top, 30c with small scissors-cut between two proofs

VERY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL AND EXTREMELY RARE COMPLETE SET OF 1861 FIRST DESIGNS AND COLORS PLATE PROOFS ON INDIA, IN BLOCKS OF FOUR. NO MORE THAN TWO CAN EXIST.

According to essay-proof specialist James Lee, only two complete sets of these India paper proofs are possible. The set possibilities are limited by the extreme rarity of the 1c, 24c, 30c and 90c values in blocks of four.

Scott Retail as singles, counting the 24c as the regularly issued No. 78P3 (though its color differs significantly from the 78P3 in lot 62) (Image)

66 P Image24c Red Lilac, Plate Proof on India (70P3). Brilliant color, choice large margins, bottom margin with tiny pinhole and tiny specks of red ink, Extremely Fine appearance, the discovery example of this plate proof on India paper, as collectors of this issue are aware, the 24c Red Lilac shade plate proof on card (70P4) is the premium value of the set and is much scarcer than the Lilac shade on card (78P4), this is the discovery example on India paper and we are aware of no others, with 2002 P.F. and 2012 A.P.S. certificates, the latter stating unique as of certificate date, unlisted in Scott, which prices the proof on card at $500.00 (Image)

69 TC Image1c-90c 1861-66 Designs, Atlanta Trial Color Proofs on Card (102TC4-111TC4). Complete set of 50 in all five colors, mounted on exhibit pages, ample to large margins, deep rich colors

VERY FINE-EXTREMELY FINE. A MAGNIFICENT COMPLETE SET OF ATLANTA TRIAL COLOR PROOFS FOR THE 1861-66 ISSUE DESIGNS. THIS IS ONLY THE THIRD COMPLETE SET OF ALL 50 PROOFS WE HAVE OFFERED IN DECADES.

The Atlanta trial color plate proofs on card were prepared for display at the 1881 International Cotton Exposition in Atlanta. Only one sheet of 50 in each color was printed. The sheets were somehow acquired by James A. Petrie of Phillipsburg, New Jersey, at the close of the exposition (along with the 1869 invert card proof sheets). Petrie claimed that he rescued the proofs just before they were to be burned. They were cut up into one set of blocks of eight, two sets of blocks of four, pairs and singles. These are often offered either by denomination or in other smaller groupings. It is difficult to assemble the complete set. (Image)
