United States and Confederate States Postal History continued...

5c 1861-68 Issues Specialized Collection: Buff Shades (Scott 67) continued...
Lot Sym. Lot Description
2168 c Image5c Buff (67). Two, tied by well-struck "New-York 9 Nov." double-circle datestamp on Finkle & Lyon Sewing Machine Co. illustrated corner card cover to Clementsport, Nova Scotia, light strike of red "U. States" in arc, Nov. 1861 transit and receiving backstamps, stamps lifted and carefully reaffixed in proper position, small cover tear at top left, right stamp pulled perf at top right

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A BEAUTIFUL AND EXTREMELY RARE USE OF THE 1861 5-CENT BUFF ON AN ILLUSTRATED ADVERTISING COVER TO NOVA SCOTIA. THIS IS THE ONLY ADVERTISING COVER WITH ANY OF THE 1861 5-CENT SHADES WE HAVE OFFERED SINCE KEEPING COMPUTERIZED RECORDS.

A Power Search review did not find any other advertising or illustrated corner card covers with Scott 67, 67a or 67b. This use to Nova Scotia makes this even more desirable.

2169 c Image5c Buff (67). Used with 10c Green (68) and British Columbia & Vancouver Island, 1860, 2-1/2p Dull Rose (2), U.S. stamps tied by target cancels, 2-1/2p stamp cancelled by "3" in barred oval, "Post Office Victoria V.I." coat-of-arms handstamp on 1862 cover from Hope, British Columbia to Toronto, Canada West, via Vancouver Island, San Francisco and Chicago, red "Chicago Ill. Paid 15" exchange office credit handstamp without date ties two stamps, cover with soiling and stamps with various faults

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE BRITISH COLUMBIA AND UNITED STATES MIXED-FRANKING COVER SENT FROM VANCOUVER ISLAND TO CANADA VIA SAN FRANCISCO AND CHICAGO.

The "3" barred numeral cancel is attributed to the post office at Hope, a town at the confluence of the Fraser and Coquihalla Rivers in British Columbia, which was laid out in 1859 during the Fraser Canyon Gold Rush. The internal postage from Hope to Victoria was prepaid by the 2-1/2p stamp, and the U.S. 15c rate to Canada for distances over 3,000 miles was paid by the 5c and 10c 1861 stamps. The coat-of-arms handstamp indicates that the 5c colonial postage was paid.
