Republic of Mississippi designation, docketing at left confirms dates of use, Very Fine, a very rare use of the Republic of Mississippi address on a Confederate cover, Mississippi was referred to as the "Republic" for a short time, from its secession on January 9, 1861, until its admission to the Confederacy on February 4, but the use of that term is rarely found on mail, this is also a scarce Louisiana Independent State use of U.S. postage, Louisiana seceded from the Union on January 26, 1861, and was admitted to the Confederacy on February 4, creating only a nine-day period when Independent State use was possible (Image)
