Patriotics–General Issues
Lot Sym. Lot Description
592 c Image5c Green, Stone 2 (1). Positions 11/21 from the transfer stone of 50, huge margins including sheet margin at left and portions of adjoining stamps at right, two tiny inconsequential brown spots, tied by blue Bowling Green Ky. circular datestamp with unclear date on 7-Star Confederate Flag with "Our President (J)eff. Davis, Our Vice President (A)lex H. Stephens" Slogan Patriotic cover (F7-24) to Chief of Appointment Bureau, Post Office Department in Richmond, from the Fayette Hewitt correspondence, slightly reduced at left cutting off a single letter in each of the names

EXTREMELY FINE GEM SHEET MARGIN PAIR OF THE 5-CENT GREEN DAVIS LITHOGRAPH ON A UNIQUE 7-STAR FLAG AND "JEFF DAVIS" PATRIOTIC COVER. THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THIS DESIGN.

Ex Caspary. (Image)

593 c Image5c Green, Stone 1 (1). Three large margins, touched at top, tied by "Carolina City N.C. Mar. 12, 1862" circular datestamp on yellow cover to Argyle N.C. with red and blue Jefferson Davis Medallion, 11-Star Flags and Sunburst Patriotic design (JD-1C), flags with red bars and blue field of stars

EXTREMELY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL EXAMPLE OF THE JEFFERSON DAVIS MEDALLION PATRIOTIC DESIGN WITH BICOLORED FLAGS. THE USE OF THE JEFFERSON DAVIS GENERAL ISSUE ON ANY TYPE OF DAVIS MEDALLION COVER IS ALSO QUITE UNUSUAL. IN OUR OPINION, THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL CONFEDERATE PATRIOTIC COVERS IN EXISTENCE.

We record few examples of this red and blue Davis Medallion design. The first General Issue with President Davis is also rarely found on a Davis Medallion cover. Most of the Davis Medallion covers were used prior to release of the General Issue.

From our Sale 337, which featured one of the finest collections of Confederate Patriotics ever offered. Also ex Dr. Graves and Dr. Green (Image)

594 c Image5c Green, Stone 1-2 (1). Full margins to touched at left, tied by partly clear strike of Tudor Hall Va. circular datestamp on red and blue on yellow Jefferson Davis Medallion, 11-Star Flags and Sunburst Patriotic cover (JD-2) to Talladega Ala., slightly reduced at left but design is complete, small repair at top not affecting stamp or design

VERY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL AND RARE EXAMPLE OF THE JEFFERSON DAVIS MEDALLION PATRIOTIC DESIGN WITHOUT THE ALLEGORICAL BACKGROUND SCENE, AND FRANKED WITH THE 5-CENT GREEN JEFFERSON DAVIS GENERAL ISSUE.

This design is one of the rarest of the Jefferson Davis Medallion Patriotics. It has 11 stars in both the flags and the sunburst above "Confederate States of America." It omits the bridge, cannon, train, steamboat and cotton bale allegorical scene below the medallion, which is found on most of the other Davis designs.

595 c Image10c Dark Blue, Hoyer & Ludwig (2b). Large to huge margins including top sheet margin, rich color, small internal flaw, tied by "Gordonsville Va. Dec. 9" (1861) circular datestamp on cover to Patrick C.H. Va. with red Jefferson Davis Medallion, 11-Star Flags, Sunburst and Verse Patriotic design (JD-1C, Verse 38), small cover tear at top and expertly silked inside to preserve quality, backflap partly intact

EXTREMELY FINE APPEARING AND RARE EXAMPLE OF THE 10-CENT BLUE LITHOGRAPH ON A JEFFERSON DAVIS MEDALLION PATRIOTIC COVER.

The 10c Blue Lithograph is very rare on a Davis Medallion cover. There are probably fewer than five in existence. (Image)

Jan. 1, 1862" double-circle datestamp on red and blue 7-Star Confederate Flag Patriotic cover (F7-12A) to Milledgeville Ga., slightly reduced at right, opening tear at top goes under stamps but did not affect them, Very Fine appearance, an attractive Confederate patriotic cover from Norfolk before it fell to Union forces, ex Dr. Brandon (Image)

Imprint (F7-17), red "Due 5" in oval handstamp, sender's directive "Care S. Word Esq.", some small opening tears on backflap with one just extending to front above stamp, Very Fine and rare, we offered a nearly identical cover, but with a 5c Blue Lithograph, in our sale of the Dr. Brandon collection (Siegel Sale 1087, lot 143, ex MacBride, Handy, and Dr. Green) (Image)

Jul. 23, 1862" circular datestamp on cover to Bennettsville S.C. with red 7-Star Confederate Flag with "Union of the South" Pennant and "Southern Literary Messenger" Ribbon Patriotic design (F7-26), inconsequential edge soiling

VERY FINE. THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THIS 7-STAR CONFEDERATE FLAG "SOUTHERN LITERARY MESSENGER" PATRIOTIC DESIGN. A WONDERFUL RARITY.

The Southern Literary Messenger was a periodical published in Richmond from 1834 to 1864. Each issue contained poetry, fiction, nonfiction, reviews, and historical notes.

Ex Fuller and Powell. With 1988 C.S.A. certificate (Image)

599 c Image5c Light Blue, De La Rue (6). Vertical pair, large margins, couple small creases, tied by "Goodson Va. Jul. 29" (ca. 1862) circular datestamp on red and blue 7-Star Confederate Flag and "C.S.A." in Old English Patriotic (F7-20) cover to Edward Keen in Christiansville Va., slightly reduced at left where barely touching the bottom of the flagstaff, some minor edge toning touches top margin of pair

VERY FINE. THIS VERSION OF THE BASIC CONFEDERATE 7-STAR FLAG DESIGN WITH "C.S.A." IS CONSIDERABLY RARER THAN OTHER VARIETIES.

The few examples of this rare "C.S.A." flag design we were able to locate were used from Virginia post offices. The last we offered was a handstamped "Paid" use from the same correspondence as the cover offered here (ex Dr. Brandon).

601 c Image5c Blue, Local (7). Horizontal pair, ample margins, tied by "Savannah Ga. Paid Apr. 21" (1863) circular datestamp on red and blue 9-Star Confederate Flag and "Head Quarters, Chatham Artillery" Patriotic cover (F9-2A) to Robertville S.C., accompanied by 9-Star Confederate Flag lettersheet with the same unit designation (F9-2B, with larger stars) and manuscript "Camp Ashby", the lettersheet is dated Oct. 5, 1862 so comes from a different cover (but same correspondence)

FRESH AND EXTREMELY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL 9-STAR CONFEDERATE FLAG COVER AND LETTERSHEET MATCHED PAIR -- SHOWING BOTH STYLES OF THE F9-2 STAR SIZES.

The ninth star represents the admission of Arkansas, which was followed only three days later by North Carolina. Due to the short time period there were fewer 9-Star Confederate Patriotic designs produced than any other flag designs (7 thru 13 stars). Surviving examples are rare, and we believe the lettersheets are even rarer than the covers. (Image)
