VERY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL 7-STAR CONFEDERATE PATRIOTIC COVER USED FROM CHARLOTTESVILLE, VIRGINIA.
Ex Wiseman. Raymond Weill backstamp. With 2003 C.S.A. certificate (Image)
FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE EXAMPLE OF THE "CRESCENT RIFLES" REGIMENTAL PATRIOTIC DESIGN, WHICH WAS PRODUCED EARLY IN THE WAR.
We surveyed more than 40 different Confederate sale catalogues and reference books and located only seven used examples of this distinctive Crescent Rifles patriotic. Five are used from Tudor Hall and are genuine uses from members of the regiment. One other is a federal use with a U.S. 3c stamp used in 1862 and marked "Found at Manassas". One other bares a 10c Die B barely tied by town datestamp, possibly not originating.
Lot also includes an unused example. Ex Walcott, Weill and Bischel (Image)
