190   ImageAdams Ex. Co. * Louisville, Ky. * Aug. 12, 1861. Clearly struck circular datestamp ties 30c Orange (38), few scissors-blunted perfs, vivid color, on piece of cover sent to France, pencil "55/ Through" (55c paid, including 30c postage and 25c express fee), re-franked with horizontal strip of three 5c Brown, Ty. II (30A), tied by blue grid cancels and "Louisville Ky. Aug. 13, 1861" double-circle datestamp, part of Havre transit at bottom of piece, strip lifted to show markings, Extremely Fine, a very rare use -- bearing in mind a similar franking on full cover brought nearly $200,000 in one of our sales, this is certainly an affordable alternative -- ex Birkinbine, Walske and Dr. Brandon (Image)

Folded letter and circular datelined "Nouvelle Orleans 18 Juillet 1861", addressed to Chalon, France, carried across the lines by northbound express to New York where placed in mails by forwarder, with "Renauld Francois & Co/New York" red oval backstamp, "New York 18 Jul. 27" debit circular datestamp, ship name directive "p. Saxonia", "16" decimes due in France, French transit and receiving datestamps front and back, Very Fine through-the-lines use from New Orleans, with 2006 C.S.A. certificate (Image)

192 c ImageGermany to Confederate Texas via Washington D.C., 1863. Folded cover addressed to U.S. Secretary of War Edwin Stanton, originated in Stettin, Germany (modern-day Szczecin in Poland) with Sep. 19 (1863) boxed datestamp, red Aachen Sep. 20 transit, red "N. York Am. Pkt. 28 Paid Oct. 6" credit datestamp, docketing on flap states "Stettin Sept. 7, 1863, Theodor Wellman, Encloses letter to the Postmaster at New Braunfels Texas and requests that it may be sent to its destination," also with magenta court marking "W. 1063 Oct. 7th, 1863, Apo. Judge Advo.", Very Fine and a most unusual attempt to have a letter delivered to the Confederacy via the U.S. Secretary of War, the court markings make it apparent that the enclosed letter (which no longer accompanies) did not make it to New Braunfels but further research is warranted (Image)
