1863 One-Cent Black on Grayish, cont. (Scott 15) continued...
Lot Sym. Lot Description
1118   Image1863, 1c Black, Grayish (15). Plate 4-B, Type I (Westerberg Position 1), huge margins all around, tied by 9-bar square grid cancel on large part of cover front with mostly complete address to Father Modeste at the Catholic Mission in Honolulu, the piece is repaired but the stamp is sound with just a couple faint toning spots

EXTREMELY FINE STAMP AND PRESENTABLE USED PIECE. THE 1863 ONE-CENT BLACK NUMERAL ON GRAYISH PAPER IS EXCEEDINGLY RARE IN USED CONDITION AND THIS PIECE MAY BE AS CLOSE TO A COVER AS EXISTS.

As a measure of rarity, neither the Caspary, Honolulu Advertiser nor Golden collections contained a cover bearing the 1863 1c Black on Grayish (Scott 15). This piece was part of the Atherton collection for years until Charles J. Pietsch III acquired it. A complete cover may not exist.
