AN EXCEEDINGLY RARE MULTIPLE OF THE 1851 ONE-CENT IMPERFORATE, CONTAINING POSITION 7R1E, WHICH IS THE ONLY TYPE I POSITION, AND POSITION 8R1E, WHICH IS ONE OF THE TWO BEST EXAMPLES OF TYPE Ib ON THIS PLATE.
According to the Wagshal Census, the following used multiples containing Position 7R1E (Scott 5) are recorded: 7R1E as part of a used pair (on or off cover) -- 9; and 7R1E as part of a used strip of three -- 12.
The Types I and Ib in this dark shade are exceedingly rare, and was probably used just prior to altering the plate in the spring of 1852.
Offered to the market for the first time since Siegel Sale 460 (Oct. 22, 1974). With 1975 P.F. certificate. Wagshal Census No. 5-MUL-59. Scott Retail as combination pair $140,000.00 (Image)

VERY FINE APPEARING EXAMPLE OF POSITION 6R1E, ONE OF THE TWO POSITIONS THAT FURNISHED THE BEST TYPE Ib EXAMPLES, SHOWING THE COMPLETE DESIGN AT TOP AND NEARLY COMPLETE DESIGN AT BOTTOM.
Ex Geisler. With Ashbrook note and 2007 P.S.E. certificate (Image)
FINE APPEARING EXAMPLE OF THE RARE 1851 ONE-CENT TYPE Ib FROM PLATE ONE EARLY, FROM ONE OF THE TWO POSITIONS THAT FURNISHED THE BEST EXAMPLES OF THE TYPE.
Type Ib was produced only as an imperforate stamp from Plate 1 Early. Six positions on Plate 1E furnished stamps qualifying as Type Ib -- Positions 3-6R and 8-9R -- distinguished by the complete design at top and nearly complete design at bottom. When first entered on the plate, these six positions (as well as 7R1E) had the complete design at top and bottom. However, unlike 7R, small portions of the bottoms were burnished away. Positions 6R and 8R had less of the bottom erased than the other Type Ib positions, and for this reason they are more desirable examples of the type. (Image)
VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A SCARCE PAIR OF THE 1851 ONE-CENT TYPE Ib IMPERFORATE FROM POSITIONS 8 AND 9R1E.

However, unlike 7R, small portions of the bottoms were ironed out when the entries were made below them. Signed Ashbrook. With 1977 and 1994 P.F. certificates. Scott Retail as pair $19,000.00. Scott Retail as singles with manuscript cancels (Image)
VERY FINE. AN EXTREMELY RARE ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 1851 ONE-CENT TYPE TYPE Ic FROM THE BOTTOM ROW OF PLATE 4. THIS IS THE FIRST UNUSED EXAMPLE OF THIS TYPE CONTAINED IN POWER SEARCH SINCE OUR 1981 RARITIES SALE. ONLY TWO POSITIONS IN THE BOTTOM ROW FURNISHED THE MORE DISTINCT EXAMPLES OF TYPE Ic.
Positions 91R and 96R on Plate 4 come from the bottom row and have the full plume at bottom left and partly complete plume at right (a sub-type of Type Ia). These two are the most desirable examples of Type Ic. Other Type Ic positions on the plate are less distinct.
A Power Search review found only two others in unused condition offered in our Rarities sales and auctions since 1994, including one with top sheet margin and one with large part original gum offered in our 1981 Rarities sale.
With 1981 and 2017 P.F. certificates (Image)

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. THIS IS WITHOUT QUESTION ONE OF THE FINEST ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLES OF THE 1851 ONE-CENT TYPE II. THIS STAMP IS GRADED GEM 100 BY BOTH THE P.F. AND P.S.E.
As the gaps between positions visible on this remarkable single demonstrate, the spacing between stamps left very little room for separation. Most examples have margins either just clear or touching, or into the design. The relative paucity of large multiples in sound condition also contributes to its scarcity with such wide margins.
With 2002 and 2006 P.F. certificates (OGph, Gem 100). With 2014 P.S.E. certificate (OGph, Gem 100; SMQ $19,000.00). Only one has graded higher and two others share this grade. This is the highest grade for an original-gum example we have offered in any of our sales. (Image)
