Worldwide Treasures of Philately from The Irwin Weinberg Inventory continued...

Great Britain
Lot Sym. Lot Description
2094 c ImageGREAT BRITAIN, Mulready Envelope, R.W. Hume "Nemesis". Unnumbered envelope, quite possibly a proof, one blank side, design side showing hand-drawn and colored depiction of the "Nemesis" in the Battle of Sheepo on Sept. 17, 1841 during the First Opium War, incredibly fresh colors and detailed artisanship, accompanied by sketch of the Nemesis and translation of the document from Chinese

EXTREMELY FINE. A FANTASTIC AND RARE R.W. HUME MULREADY PROOF. A WONDERFUL PIECE OF ARTWORK.

The Nemesis is known for being the first iron warship used by the British Navy which saw action during the First Opium War under Captain William Hutcheon Hall. Referred to the Chinese as the "Devil Ship", it was eventually commissioned to suppress pirates in Indonesia and the Philippines. Described in British Pictorial Envelopes of the 19th Century by Bodily, Jarvis and Hahn. (Image)
