EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A STUNNING MINT NEVER-HINGED EXAMPLE OF THE 5-CENT LOUISIANA PURCHASE, WHICH IS GRADED SUPERB 98 BY P.S.E. -- ONLY ONE HAS GRADED HIGHER.

According to Johl (Volume 1), the Louisiana Purchase stamps were not popular with the public or collectors when they were issued, due to their larger size and unfavorable comparisons to the designs of the previous 1901 Pan-American stamps. As a result, fewer were saved.

With 2011 P.S.E. certificate (Superb 98; SMQ $4,750.00). Only one has graded higher (at 98J, which realized $16,000 hammer in our Whitman sale) and four others share this grade. Surprisingly, this is the first in this grade we have offered. (Image)

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB MINT NEVER-HINGED EXAMPLE OF THE 10-CENT LOUISIANA PURCHASE ISSUE.

The Louisiana Purchase stamps, much like the following Jamestown commemorative set, were issued with unusually narrow margins when compared to the regular issues of the 1902 Series. The example offered here is a condition rarity.

Ex "Scarsdale". With 2000 P.F. certificate. With 1998 and 2004 P.S.E. certificates (XF-Superb 95; SMQ $2,000.00) (Image)
