458 ng ImageHAWAII, 1851, 5c Blue (2). Crocker type II -- the righthand position in the setting of two -- unused (no gum), expertly repaired at top, usual faults associated with this fragile paper but of far better appearance than normally seen

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. ONE OF TWELVE RECORDED UNUSED EXAMPLES OF THE HAWAIIAN 1851 5-CENT MISSIONARY, OF WHICH ONLY TEN ARE AVAILABLE TO COLLECTORS.

Our census of Hawaii No. 2, published in Part 1 of the Honolulu Advertiser catalogue, is available at our website at http://www.siegelauctions.com/dynamic/census/HI2/HI2.pdf . We record twelve unused copies, two of which are in the Tapling Collection at the British Library. Of the twelve copies, only one is completely sound (recently offered in our sale of the Gross collection).

459 c ImageHAWAII, 1853, 5c Blue, Thick White Wove (5). Large even margins all around, tied by large segmented grid cancel, red "Honolulu * Hawaiian Islands * Oct. 8" (1853) circular datestamp on blue cover to Mrs. Olive L. Osgood in Indianapolis Ind., light strike of "San Francisco Cal. 1 Nov." circular datestamp with "SHIP" and "12" handstamps

EXTREMELY FINE. AN OUTSTANDING AND EARLY EXAMPLE OF THE 1853 5-CENT KAMEHAMEHA III ISSUE USED TO PAY HAWAIIAN POSTAGE ON A COVER TO THE UNITED STATES.

This cover was carried on Her British Majesty's Frigate Amphitrite, which departed Honolulu on Oct. 9, 1853, and arrived in San Francisco on Oct. 28. From there it was sent to Panama on the California, which departed on Nov. 1 and arrived on Nov. 17. It was carried from Aspinwall to New York on the USMSC Illinois, which departed on Nov. 19 and arrived on Nov. 28.

Fred Gregory records a total of 40 covers bearing this issue, this being the third earliest use. The two earlier covers are dated July 3 and August 16.

EXTREMELY FINE APPEARING USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1857 5-CENT ON 13-CENT PROVISIONAL SURCHARGE.

The 5c provisional surcharge was necessary due to a shortage of 5c stamps just after the transition from Postmaster Whitney to Jackson. Most were made by Jackson's clerk, Alvah Clark, around the start of 1857. New supplies of the 5c stamp (Scott No. 8) were received at the end of June 1857.

VERY FINE APPEARING MIXED-FRANKING COVER WITH THE UNITED STATES 12-CENT 1851 ISSUE AND HAWAII 5-CENT 1857 KAMEHAMEHA III ISSUE.

Carried on the Yankee, which departed Honolulu March 28 and arrived San Francisco April 10. Mail for the East Coast was postmarked April 13, and this was carried overland on the Butterfield stage route.

FINE APPEARING UNUSED EXAMPLE OF THE 1863 2-CENT NUMERAL IN DARK BLUE, WITH THE BROKEN "2" PLATE VARIETY.

The 2c Dark Blue on Bluish paper (Scott 17) was printed after Scott 18 and before Scott 20. It is one of the rarest of all Numeral Issues in either unused or used condition, and almost all known examples have faults. (Image)
