Clear strike of red straightline handstamp, used with apparently every other marking in the New York post office including "FREE", "STEAM BOAT", "TOO LATE", "SHIP", boxed "MISSENT", "Paid" arc and "6" in circle handstamps, also New York Ship Sep. 4" and "New-York Sep. 4" circular datestamps, on folded letter addressed to "Gen. Bennett, Herald Office I think", contents may be the most banal we have ever encountered "Original conundrum for the Herald - I grew it, Peter Pangloss. Hahn surmised this may have been used around 1837-38 (Image)

459 c ImageWe Ask of Congress Cheap Inland and Ocean Postage. Barnabas Bates illustrated propaganda cover with "New York 5 Jul. 4" circular datestamp and manuscript "Paid" to London, England, sender's embossing on top flap for mechanical engineer, 1854 receiving backstamp, some edgewear including tiny piece out at top left

VERY FINE. A RARE BARNABAS BATES "CHEAP INLAND AND OCEAN POSTAGE" PROPAGANDA COVER SENT FROM NEW YORK TO ENGLAND. THIS IS THE ONLY EXAMPLE TO AN OVERSEAS DESTINATION CONTAINED IN POWER SEARCH.

Barnabas Bates (1785-1853) was born in England and came to the United States as a child. He became a Baptist preacher in Rhode Island, where he was also for some time collector for the port of Bristol under President Adams. He became a Unitarian and established in New York in 1825 a weekly paper called the Christian Inquirer. During the Jackson administration he received an appointment in the New York post office and was for some time acting postmaster. He became an advocate for cheap land and ocean postage and lived to see the 3c domestic rate introduced in 1851.

Approximately a half dozen of this design are contained in Power Search, but this is the only one sent to a destination outside of the United States, and the only stampless use.
