776 c Image15c Brown & Blue, Ty. II (119). Rich colors, tied by cork cancel and by "Washington D.C. Jan. 12" (1870) circular datestamp, red New York exchange office datestamp on small cover to Switzerland, "PAID ONLY/TO ENGLAND" two-line handstamp, "GB/40c" Anglo-French accountancy handstamp (for unpaid mail from the U.S. exchanged between GB and France), "5" decimes due crossed out and "F./27" oval handstamp applied in France (for unpaid letter exchanged between France and Switzerland), red crayon "70" for postage due in Switzerland, London and Berne backstamps, one panel on back with tear, Very Fine, a beautiful cover, the sender attempted prepayment at the 15c rate for U.S.-French treaty mail, since the treaty had recently expired it was sent via British Open Mail (overpaid, but only to England), the writing is all but illegible so the French authorities may have believed it was terminating in France and struck the "5" decimes due handstamp, once its destination was correctly ascertained the due marking was crossed out, the Franco-Swiss handstamp was applied and it was sent on (Image)
