421 c ImageEdward D. Robie Correspondence. Approximately 65 covers either to or from Rear Admiral Edward D. Robie, who served on Commodore Perry's historic trip to Japan; he also served during the Civil War on the USS Mohican, which shortly prior to his service captured Capt. Nathaniel Gordon -- the only American slave trader to be hanged -- Robie held offices on nine separate ships during his career, including Fleet Engineer, correspondence includes nice group with New York Steamship cancels on inbound mail (some with 10c stamps), "Due 2" and "Ship" markings, several with endorsements or docketing indicating origin point, lots of interesting content, some faults, some Fine-Very Fine, also including 1873 diary of Harry Robie (may be his son) and 57 items from an unrelated correspondence mostly with 3c Bank Notes (see lots 665A, 785A and 924A for other covers from the Robie correspondence) (Image)
