EXTREMELY FINE. ONE OF THE FINEST CENTERED COLUMBIA AIR POST STAMPS IN EXISTENCE.

Only 300 were printed and less than 200 unused stamps exist. The vast majority are centered to the left. The only copy we could find that compares to the centering of this stamp is the ex William H. Gross example.

345 og ImageNEWFOUNDLAND, 1932, $1.50 on $1.00 Dornier DO-X, Inverted Surcharge (C12a; SG 221a). Lightly hinged, choice centering, rich colors on brilliant paper

EXTREMELY FINE. ONE OF THE FINEST KNOWN EXAMPLES OF THE RARE DORNIER DO-X WITH INVERTED SURCHARGE. ONLY 50 WERE PRINTED.

These stamps were printed in sheets of four for use on the return flight of the Dornier DO-X from New York to Germany. Newfoundland mail was accepted for despatch by the DO-X, to be prepaid by Newfoundland stamps. According to the Sanabria catalogue, a total of 8,000 stamps with the DO-X surcharge were printed. Of these, 50 received inverted surcharges. Current estimates of the number known vary between 20 and 40. The Killien example is among the very finest known.
