VERY FINE. AN INCREDIBLY RARE INTER-PANE STRIP OF FOUR OF THE 1865 5-CENT "HAWAIIAN POSTAGE" ISSUE. THIS IS THE ONLY SUCH MULTIPLE IN EXISTENCE.

A tête-bêche block of four is known, as is a block of eleven containing three stamps from an adjoining pane (ex Golden). This strip is a remarkable rarity.

Oct. 9, 1865" double-circle datestamp, red "Honolulu U.S. Postage Paid Sep. 16" also ties U.S. stamp on cover to Titus M. Coan at Albion N.Y., U.S. stamp perfs trimmed at top (probably at time it was placed on the cover since the s.e. forms a straight line with the top of the Hawaii stamp), small cover repair at top right, missing most of right flap, some slight overall toning and edgewear, Fine and attractive use, carried on the American bark Onward which departed Honolulu Sep. 16 and arrived San Francisco Oct. 7, it was then carried by overland mail, ex Crocker and Atherton (Image)
