1767 c ImagePaid Wheeler's Express. Printed frank in banner modified from earlier "Holland & Wheeler's Express" woodcut (Thomas WHE-001) on 3c Pink on Buff entire (U35) to San Francisco, part strike of blue Wheeler's Express double-circle handstamp (also modified by removing Holland's name), conjunctive use with orange "Wells, Fargo & Co's Express from Marysville" label, pencil "Aug. 27/64" docketing, cover with faults incl. repaired at right slightly into embossed stamp, otherwise Fine and very rare with the Wells, Fargo label (the only example recorded by Lyons), according to Nathan early in 1862 Sam Wheeler bought H. C. Morley's interest in Holland, Morley & Co., which served the Gibsonville Ridge and Feather River mining camps, and eventually he and Holland renamed the express Holland & Wheeler; in December 1863 Wheeler withdrew from the partnership and started his own express with his brother, operating along the same route, and he evidently took the "Holland & Wheeler" woodcut and handstamp and altered them by removing Holland's name; the two brothers closed down their express after a short time and Wheeler became partners in Wheeler, Rutherford & Co. in 1864 (Image)

1774 c ImageWylie & Co.'s Esmeralda & Monoville Express. Manuscript frank "By Wylie & Co.'s Esmeralda Express Paid" (Thomas WYL-100) on 3c Red on White Star Die entire (U26), conjunctive use to Alvarado Cal. with Wells, Fargo & Co. printed frank and "J. Bamber & Co. Contra-Costa Express, San Francisco" oval handstamp, blue "Wells, Fargo & Co. Carson City May 5" oval datestamp, trivial flap tear and slight diagonal crease

VERY FINE. ONE OF TWO RECORDED EXAMPLES OF WYLIE & COMPANY'S EXPRESS FRANK. ONLY THIS COVER IS A TRIPLE CONJUNCTIVE USE WITH WELLS FARGO AND BAMBER.

This cover is illustrated in the Gamett book (p. 151) with the following information: "Wylie & Co. operated an express in the Esmeralda District [of Nevada] during 1861. Based on the surviving two covers that were carried by Wylie, the letters from the Esmeralda District connected with the U.S. mail in Placerville and Wells, Fargo & Co. in Carson City. This indicates that the route from the Aurora area ran into both California and Nevada Territory." This cover was carried by Wylie to Wells, Fargo & Co. in Carson City, then by Wells Fargo to San Francisco, where it was given to Bamber & Co. for the southbound journey to Alvarado in Alameda County. Triple conjunctive uses are scarce in any combination of companies, but this conjunctive use with Wylie & Co.'s Nevada express is extraordinarily rare.
