Western Expresses: Pauly thru Swift

1687 c ImageN. O. Pauly's Express. Paid. Printed frank (Thomas PUL-001) on 3c Pink on White entire (U58), "Gibsonville Cal. Mar. ?" circular datestamp, addressed to San Francisco, embossed stamp with some slight oxidation and right edge repaired, appears Very Fine, Pauly operated his express between Gibsonville and surrounding mining camps, he started in 1864 on his own, took in a partner named Nohrman, then bought out his partner in 1866, this frank comes from one of the periods in which Pauly was alone -- all related franks are extremely rare, this style has only two used examples recorded in Thomas book (p. 619) where it is noted that "most if not all envelopes will show some type of water damage from a fire" (Image)

Printed frank in ornamental frame (Thomas RAU-001) on 3c Green entire to San Francisco, manuscript "Schellbourne Nev Mar 27/72" postmark and cancel (evidently carried by Raum and put into the mails there), backflap removed and reduced at top clear of frank, couple tiny tears at top, otherwise Fine, these rare Raum franks are typically postmarked at Schellbourne, this is the example illustrated in Thomas, which records only four examples of this style (Image)

Clearly struck oval handstamp (Thomas REY-100) on brown cover from New York City to San Francisco, sent by mail via Panama with "New-York 40 Sep. 26" integral-rate circular datestamp, carried by Reynolds to the mining camps with tiny manuscript "2" probably indicating $2.00 express fee, neatly docketed with Nov. 12, 1850, arrival date, with original letter from a miner's wife with gossip and news from home, mentions regular mail from California every two weeks, Very Fine, Reynolds & Co. was one of the earliest California expresses carrying mail to the Southern Mines, beginning in Jan. 1850, he connected with Todd & Bryan in Stockton and through them to San Francisco, and with Adams & Co. to other parts of the U.S. and to Europe, Reynolds & Co. dissolved in the fall of 1851, ex Dale-Lichtenstein (Image)
