Lot Sym. Lot Description
4076 c The Calvet M. Hahn Collection of Hudson River Steamboat Mail. Balance of collection comprising approximately 91 folded letters and covers, all related to the North River Line (Fulton and Livingston) and later Hudson River routes, a brief overview follows by years: 1800-19, 13 examples including an 1804 letter sent with goods on an Albany sail-packet, name-of-boat manuscript directives incl. "Richmond", "Saratoga", "Fulton", Dec. 1810 Hudson fancy circle and ms. "Ship 26", 1812 Albany circle and "SHIP" handstamp, Mar. 1814 with ms. "Ship 6" applied at Newburgh, Apr. 1818 Kingston postmaster's frank to Albany with unusual ms. "Boat" instead of "B", 1819 black "B" applied at Albany (unusual in black); 1820-29, 14 examples including variety of "STEAM BOAT" straightlines used at New York City, Poughkeepsie (slanted caps), Albany (two-line), a couple of Albany ms. "B" and unusual "Charge on any boat" from Fort Edwards; 1830-39, 25 examples including New York City "STEAM BOAT" straightlines, one straightline Hahn attributed to Hudson ("unique") but it is probably the NYC marking, Newburgh ms. "SB", a few of the "S.BOAT" straightline and a tiny version (rare) applied at Kingston, Albany two-line handstamp incl. one with circular datestamp (unusual), ms. "Catskill" described as a marking applied by agent on steamboat; 1840's and 1850's, 13 examples pre-1851 rate change with a few unusual items such as Kingston ms. "St. Boat 12-1/2", also a letter with sender's directive "Pr Land Mail" (unusual non-steamboat route), and 26 examples after July 1, 1851 rate change with "5" and "10" rate markings, incl. three with Troy "STEAM" and 7c or 12c rates (2c ship fee applied), Rondout N.Y. ms. "St Boat Way 7", and 13 with Hudson River Mail route agent circular datestamp incl. one with "FREE" handstamp; condition and quality of strikes varies, which is reflective of Calvet Hahn's focus on research and study, but there are many collectible covers and several Very Fine or better, a valuable holding which could augment an existing collection or form the nucleus of expanded collecting and study of the Hudson River steamboat system
