4111 c Image(Cuba to Scotland via New York, 1857) "ART - 2". Straightline handstamp on back of folded letter datelined "Havana 28th Novr. 1857" to Edinburgh, Scotland, "10" in circle steamship rate handstamp applied at New York, red "New-York Br. Pkt. Dec. 9" and "America Liverpool DE 20 57" datestamps on back, "1/2-1/2" British due handstamp, Edinburgh Dec. 21 receiving backstamp, slight wear along fold, still Very Fine, the scarce "ART-2" was applied in Liverpool between 1856 and 1857, it referred to the article that allowed for a surcharge of 2-1/2 pence (5 cents) for letters from the U.S. to the U.K. originating more than 2,500 miles from the American port of steamer departure (Image)

Hahn Collection of Ship Letter Mail. 46 folded letters or covers, mainly 1800 to 1840's, a couple earlier including 1791 from Cadiz to NYC with Philadelphia Franklin mark and 1793 NY to Norwich Conn. with "N. London" double-circle datestamp and ms. "Sh 10", more than 30 with New York markings incl. a couple with Clamshell datestamp, numerous "SHIP" straightlines and "New York Ship" datestamp, other ports-of-entry incl. Boston (3), Baltimore (2), Philadelphia (1), two 1826 letters to New Orleans with black "SHIP" handstamp, an unusual 1831 letter from Canandaigua to Scotland with small black "SHIP" which Hahn attributed to NYC, condition generally Fine-Very Fine, a worthwhile study group (PDF available from our website)

Approximately 260 folded letters/covers and envelopes displaying a wide array of uses in international mail, primarily 1830's through 1860's, including pioneer steamships, British Cunard sailings, retaliatory rates, destinations in the British Isles and Europe, markings from major ports of entry, and so much more, many scarce covers will found in this group, most have been carefully annotated by Calvet Hahn, some degree of faults to be expected in a study collection of this magnitude, overall Fine-Very Fine and all presentable, the product of years of study and collecting, and for the successful bidder this lot promises a future of further discovery -- worth careful evaluation
