Lot Sym. Lot Description
459 c Image24c Gray Lilac (37). Wide left interpane margin with centerline, rich color, tied by grid cancel, clearly struck "Charleston S.C. EXTREMELY FINE. A RARE CONFEDERATE USE OF THE UNITED STATES 24-CENT 1860 ISSUE ON A TRANSATLANTIC COVER TO ENGLAND.

The U.S. naval blockade of Charleston was initiated on May 10, 1861. United States mail continued to be carried north until the Washington D.C.-Richmond route was closed on May 23. This cover shows the unusual circumstance of mail bound for England being carried after Confederate commerce ships could no longer sail from Charleston.
