Maury of the 24th Va. VERY FINE APPEARING EXAMPLE OF THE 5-CENT FREDERICKSBURG POSTMASTER'S PROVISIONAL ISSUE ON A SMALL MOURNING COVER.

Richard Launcelot Maury (1840-1907) became the commander of the 24th Va. during the 1862 battle of Williamsburg when superior officers were wounded or killed. There are a number of General Issue covers as well as approximately ten Fredericksburg Provisional covers addressed to him -- nearly all with mourning borders. Creases are found throughout due to the fragile nature of the paper, some quite heavy. This example has lighter creasing than many of the others we record. Nine of the 26X1 Provisional covers were offered to the market in our 1966 Rarities of the World sale. For a biography of Maury see Confederate Philatelist (1971, pp. 70-73). (Image)
