2309   Confederate Soldiers' Correspondence -- The Thompson Family. The balance of covers and letters from members of the Thompson family who fought in the Confederate Army (several are offered as individual lots in this sale), an outstanding group comprising 8 covers and 13 pages of letters mounted on pages with extensive historical/military background, the letters are written by A. W. Thompson (Army of Tennessee), J. P. Thompson (Army of Northern Virginia), J. N. Thompson (Army of Vicksburg), their cousin Thomas Watts (from home in Catarrh S.C.), and one from Rev. William H. Pearson to the parents about A.W.'s impending death from his battle wounds, one cover is a 3c Red Nesbitt entire with "Hamburg Ark. Sep. 11" (1861) circular datestamp, another with 10c No. 12 tied by "ARMY/OF/TENN" three-line field handstamp, others are typical "due" covers with soldier endorsements, the letters are filled with significant military content from major engagements, must be read to be appreciated, condition a bit mixed as usual for Confederate soldiers' correspondence, an outstanding group

2311   "Corinth Miss. March 26th 1862" -- Before the Battle of Shiloh. Outstanding 4-page letter from Dr. E. W. Treadwell in anticipation of the Battle of Shiloh, "We are expecting a great battle to commence in less than 10 days...", extraordinary commentary including references to sick soldiers, restriction on mail "for fear that we will let out important items in regard to war matters", enemy strength "80,000 of the enemy are crossing the swamps", mention of Generals Pillow ("thought proved to be a traitor and is now under arrest"), Beauregard (collecting church bells to make cannons), Johnson, Polk, and finally "I had rather die than be a vassal to Abe Linkhorn", Dr. Treadwell also comments on the high cost of paper ("paper worth $2.00 again & envelopes 5 cents apiece), articulate lengthy letters from Confederate soldiers about to engage in major battles of the Civil War are scarce, this particular letter is outstanding, mounted on pages with historical background etc.

2314   Balance of the Army of Tennessee Postal History Collection. 57 covers and 15 letters, all to or from Confederate soldiers in the field engaged in campaigns related to the Army of Tennessee, mounted on pages with extensive historical/military background, maps, photos, etc., the covers include numerous soldiers' endorsements, due markings, variety of town datestamps, some with General Issues incl. 5c Green (1), 5c Local (7) and 10c Engraved (11, 12), a few adversity covers (made from printed form, turned), some of the letters have good military-related content, including mention of Sherman burning Atlanta, condition much better than average, all Fine and presentable, this collection is the product of a lifetime of collecting and research, it would take years and a great deal of money to recreate this holding, worth careful examination and study, of inestimable value to the collector or dealer in Civil War postal history
