VERY FINE. A RARE USE OF THE 30-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE ON A DOUBLE-RATE FRENCH DIRECT PACKET COVER FROM SAN FRANCISCO TO FRANCE. THIS IS THE ONLY COVER BEARING THE 30-CENT USED FROM SAN FRANCISCO.
This cover was carried on the French CGT Ligne H Ville de Paris and therefore was subject to the 12c per quarter-ounce credit to France. The 30c pays the double treaty rate for a letter weighing more than a quarter but less than a half-ounce. The New York 12c credit would have applied to a letter weighing no more than a quarter ounce. Perhaps the sender in San Francisco did not want to risk having all of the postage disregarded if underpaid and applied the 30c stamp.
The PRA 1869 census lists a cover front only used from San Francisco to France. This cover is not listed in the census, and it is the only intact 30c 1869 cover originating in San Francisco (The 30c "Miro" cover passed through San Francisco in transit from the Far East).
With 1998 P.F. and P.S.E. certificates (Image)
VERY FINE. A DESIRABLE DOUBLE-RATE COVER FROM NEW YORK TO PARIS WITH THE 30-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE.
The correct credit to France on a double-rate cover to France sent by British or American Packet via England was 12c (2 x 6c), but a fair number of covers show incorrect credit markings.
Signed Ashbrook. With 1999 P.F. certificate. (Image)
VERY FINE. ONLY TWO COMBINATION COVERS ARE RECORDED WITH THE 15-CENT TYPE I AND 30-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE. ONE OF THE MOST OUTSTANDING 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE COVERS EXTANT AND A HIGHLIGHT OF DR. HEIMBURGER'S COLLECTION.
This franking pays the triple 15c treaty rate to France, and the 18c credit corresponds to the triple 6c credit to France for a letter sent by British or American Packet via England. One other cover is known with a similar franking. It is also addressed to France (from New Orleans), but was carried by American Packet Direct with a corresponding 9c credit (Walske collection).
Ex Seybold and Knapp. With copy of 1996 P.F. certificate. (Image)
VERY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL AND RARE ONE-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL FRANKING FOR THE 4-CENT BRITISH OPEN MAIL RATE TO FRANCE.
The "Short Paid" marking was applied by Munroe & Co. in Paris to help justify charging its client the five decimes postage due. This is one of the finest of the few 1c 1869 covers franked for the 4c British Open Mail rate.
Illustrated in color in 1869 PRA Census (p. 123) and Baker's U.S. Classics. Ex Krug, Baker, Grunin and Coulter. Signed Ashbrook. (Image)
